Mr. Byrne: When you draw a two-page spread like that, what size is the physical paper?

•••

Approximately twice the width of a regular page.

Back in the Seventies Marvel (and DC?) tried to save money by having pencilers do double page spreads on a regular sized board turned sideways. Unfortunately, inkers mostly did not adjust for this (I can’t recall if letterers did), so it was often a lurch to turn to a “double page spread” on which the ink line was twice as thick.

The experiment didn’t last.

I'm morbidly interested to see how much of Claremont's backstory of the N'Garai will be used here!  I'm suspecting not so much.  We'll see!

Claremont had a tendency to segregate everything he wrote into his own little Claremontverse at Marvel.  So his demons weren't regular old demons.  They were the "Elder Gods" - the N'Garai - and they showed in X-Men, the Dracula stories he wrote, his Satana stories, his stories about Ilyana/Magik and Limbo/Belasco, and even Marada the She-Wolf (a repurposed Red Sonja story).

Nothing wrong with that.  Marvel had various entities that could be called demons.  But Claremont really wanted to create and manage his own mythos separate from the rest of the Marvel books which he didn't control.  Occasionally others played with them too and Claremont incorporated what he liked (Bruce Jones created Belasco in Ka-Zar).

I’ll save you the wait. Since I’ve read nothing of what Chris did with the characters/concepts after I left, anything that turns up here that seems to derive from his work is purely coincidental.

Never knew/realised before how different looking the original was from the one in #143. Much prefer JB's design.

This story has more than one demon, and I’ve attempted to diversify their designs.

That first panel with Kitty poking her head out of the rock has some really cool depth to it. The way you penciled it, it looks almost like when background elements are out of focus next to a sharp subject!

I love that Kitty felt she needed Peter to grab her belt to help her check out this temple safely. Half of the reason I like it is that it's human and relatable-- and half is that I don't quite get what exactly she's asking him to do if things go wrong.

Can he pull her back when they are both phasing? I hadn't ever thought about that before.

It's been established that Kitty can phase parts of herself. It's not a case of all or nothing.

Here, she's phasing her upper torso, head and arms. If something goes wrong, Peter can pull her back.

Wise old saying: Look not for more than what is there!
