It's a good point though that it's probably hard to keep secrets when dating a mind reader.

I wonder... if it hadn't been for the Dark Phoenix
storyline, what direction would the romance
between Charles Xavier and Lilandra had went?

The new page... I love the distinction between the
Shi'ar's hair/feathers. Also, cool alien designs
and backgrounds. And only you, JB, could match Dave
Cockrum on making those Shi'ar spaceships look so
cool. They really were nifty designs!

One of the fun elements in this project—and there are many—has been extrapolating other ships of the fleet, keeping Dave’s original designs in mind.

I forget if the 'bug' ship from 137 was originally yours - but you made it look like it was!

The “double boomerang” ship? With the multi-story bridge? The one destroyed by Dark Phoenix?

That was mine.

Curious thing, there. When I designed it—a generous term—it did not occur to me in any way that I was breaking with Dave’s design model. It wasn’t until years later, when a fan asked why I’d done it that I even realized I had!

I just thought it was cool looking.

As a reader, I didn't like Lilandra scolding Reed Richards and missing the point
of saving Galactus, but without the "Trial" story, I never would have
appreciated the wide implications that, admittedly, were already in the first
Galactus story. At the end of the day, I felt Lilandra was appropriately
convinced that her anxiety was understandable, but out of line.

That cross-talking story is a favorite of mine.

I feel the same thing happening a bit here -- and I can't help liking Lilandra as
written here -- scared to death, trying to do the right thing, with disastrous
results.

Whoops, I meant this one:

The 'boomerang' ship was from #135, I believe.

EDIT: (and duh, you use this ship this issue!)

For instance, I like the posture of the chastised alien technician in the upper right panel (looking sideways through half-closed eyes!), and how Lilandra's (leopard spot!) cloak drags in the middle panel as she walks away.

Leopard spot? Open to interpretation, I suppose, but it looks more like a royal ermine to me. I presume it is actually some alien version.

JB you have a real knack for making readers genuinely like/dislike characters. Not such an easy thing to do.

My initial thoughts.

1) Since lobotomized Jean is the "copy", the reason we are seeing her fade is because Phoenix is no longer keeping her in existence.  That's my guess.  This means eventually we'll only have the real Jean.  I assume the reason JB is going with the "copy" story is to make sure Jean herself is not tainted by Phoenix's crimes in any way.

2) Obviously this means the X-Men will recover the real Jean at some point to replace the copy.  Can't have two Jeans running around, can we?

3) Knowing the original story really undermines the shock and surprise the reader should have of this revelation.  Can you imagine actually reading this in 1981?  Phoenix made a copy of Jean - what does that mean?  I'd be totally confused (and possibly iffed that the "Jean" I'd been reading about for the past 4-5 years wasn't the real one).  Remember how people reacted to the Spider-clone fiasco of the nineties!  Of course, this wouldn't have happened back then.  JB can do this now because of all the retroactive continuity that's been established, and which we already know.

4) It's easy to dislike Lilandra for not informing the X-Men.  But remember that she is the leader of the Shi'ar Empire and has certain responsibilities.  Leaders need to act in best intentions for the group they are responsible for, not their own personal feelings.  We need to learn more about what's going to happen before we judge her (even though we know the results have been disastrous).

5) I am assuming Lilandra is attempting to harness the Phoenix in the same way the Skrulls were established to have used a Cosmic Cube to protect their own empire.  It began with good intentions, but ended in disaster for them.  There is some amount of power that just can't be safely handled by mortal man (or alien).

Interesting. Lilandra has to rest due to the ordeal she went through... WHAT ordeal? She sent the Imperial Guard to fight the X-Men and kinda stacked the deck. Yeah, her ship took a hit, but it was rather obvious that she wasn't hurt. Her separation from Xavier? If she truly loved him, she would have worked to find a way to NOT lobotomize Jean, surely his most beloved "child."

She's obviously an interstellar empress, with all the attendant responsibilities. But I'm not so sure she's gone through any ordeal.
