Saw this posted at Heritage the other day:
I realized that there were a lot of books that had random JB covers during the 80s. Any particular stories about why / how that happened?

Many of those covers happened because I’d gone into the office, and the editors just asked!

How does the black get flattened out during the printing?
JB is the first one I ever recall going completely black with a character's costume and it's a great effect when used just right, like he did.

I agree, Andy!
That Batman from Legends mini-series made a huge impression on me as an infant back in the day (still does).

I just realized - is that Captain America cover also the source of the Cap 50th Anniversary UPC box?

Yep. Over the years, that Cap head has been reused in a number of different ways

You really can make the case that JB is to Marvel what Jerry West is to the NBA (aka "The Logo").

I second Nathan on that Spectacular Spider-Man #101. That cover is one of the reasons why I liked the black costume and one of my favorite John Byrne covers period, along with Alpha Flight #3 which obviously wasn't a one-off cover like the Peter Parker issue was. JB really knows how to make those (mostly) black and white covers sing.
