Carmen: I recall seeing and browsing through it at the LCS back when it came out, but when I saw what JB did to clean it up (hid the naughty bits from the original behind vines and air bubbles), I felt like it wasn't really worth buying. I still wanted to have the original unedited version from TAOJB that I saw. I'm not sure if he wants to restate the reason why he redid it, but I recall him not being quite comfortable the original in retrospect.

---

A quote from John Byrne:

"When we came to reprint "Critical Error" in this format, I decided to put a bit of clothing on the female lead, and there was more than 15 years of added puritanism behind the logic. There was greed. I'd like to sell a few of these things, and, oddly enough, while top-half nudity is apparently more-or-less okay for general consumption, bottom-half nudity -- at least from the front -- puts the work into a different category and severely reduces the marketplace."

Thank you for the clearing up. I could see why they'd not want to do an unedited CE reprint if they were aiming for a broader audience. Still, it's kind of odd to say that partial (butt and boobies) nudity became somewhat acceptable, but the full nude (shy of strategic obstruction and lighting) wasn't.

Americans are of many conflicting minds when it come to the unclothed haman body. Whenever a movie is described as containing "partial nudity" a small corner of my brain thinks "Which part?" I mean, if I'm wearing a short sleeved shirt, that's "partial nudity " right? And, of course, the acceptable "parts" of a man cover more square footage than a woman.

Funny thing is, we'd be far less obsessed with sex and nudity, as a nation, if we were, well, less obsessed! It feeds on itself.

Speaking of "Critical Error", besides myself did anyone else here buy it when it was released as a special one shot issue?

-----

My LCS had this on the mature readers shelf, and I was underage when it came out, so I couldn't buy it. (Yet I still was able to flip through it.) Amusingly, my parents would have had no issue with my seeing boobies, especially ones that only existed as lines on paper.

I remember in the 90`s seeing one of those U.S. `Emergency` type tv shows,it featured a helicopter crash rescue, they removed an injured man from the chopper wreckage showing his severed arm wound, but pixellated the bum cleavage of a rescuer,i found that very odd!

Part of that dichotomy in American sensibilities. Blood & Guts is fine. Don't show anyone that we all have butt-cracks!

I love this book! When I first saw it, I was knocked for a loop by that
color Superman piece! I still consider that to be one of my all-time
favorite Superman posters!
