JB, A friend of mine just bought a stat used in "Phoenix the Untold Story". He has a few questions about it:
"I am wondering if you remember anything about this "page" I own.It is from "Phoenix the Untold Story" which mostly used stats from Uncanny X- men 137 with some modifications on the lettering. I have seen other pages from the same issue, they just stated the whole page and did not have your signature in the back. For this particular page, individual panels were stated, and when held against the light, some figures were drawn on the art board before the stat was put on top. It also has your signature in the back. Do you remember anything about this page? Do you why this page was done this way and who drew the figures before stats panels were placed over it?"

Well, that's not my signature, for a start! Not much I can say about the rest of it. A lot of hack and slash occurred on those pages when Shooter order things changed that he'd previously approved. Originally I had drawn Cyclops shaking hands with Gladiator, for instance. I felt that was an important "no hard feelings" between warriors moment. (The "honorable foe" line actually belongs to Gladiator.) Somebody decided not, and Terry was told to redrawn Gladiator as Angel. When the "Untold Tale" was done Gladiator was restored, but the handshake wasn't, and from the looks of the art, the Gladiator figure was drawn by Vinnie Colletta!!! Altogether, tho, I hope this was a cheap page to buy -- tho, for a page of stats, any money spent would probably be too much!

Terry and/or Vinnie forgot to finish Colossus's left side.

"The Dark Phoenix Saga" looms large in my world - I had been reading my brother's UNCANNY X-MEN issues and started to pick them up off the stands with #136, the issue right before the double sized conclusion, "The Fate of the Phoenix".
I find the backstage drama fascinating. I like the ending that was originally published, but the ending featured in "The Untold Story" is very strong as well. That would have been an excellent finish, but ultimately I prefer what was published.

JB Thanks for answering the question. My friend didn't pay alot for the page. He picked it up with a number of other stats from the story.

I loved Phoenix! One of the best costumes of all time IMO. Though the Dark Phoenix Saga is my favorite comics story ever, I wonder what kind of character we would have today if she hadn't become so powerful. When I'd read the Hidden Years, I'd daydream of JB doing an updated version of the original five with a blue-furred Hank and Jean in her Phoenix costume (Warren would definitely NOT be Arcangel).

I just finished the "Dark Phoenix" storyline in Essential X-Men vol.2. No matter how many times I read it and no matter that later it was established as not being Jean,it's still a powerful story and no slight to any other X-Men artist, but no other artist but JB could do it right IMHO.

I've often wondered about the marketability of a line of books having other artists take classic stories or story arcs and re-create them as f they'd been assigned the book/script originally --- what would X-Men 137 look like if drawn by John Romita Jnr or George Perez...for example.

==== An interesting idea Trevor; but I'm guess that reading such a book would be like watching PSYCHO with Vince Vaughn.
Although, if I ever win the lottery, I would love to see JB's version of FANTASTIC FOUR 294.

@ Trevor,
I recall an issue of SAVAGE SWORD of CONAN that had John Buscema pencil the story 'Tower of The Elephant', some years after the published issue of CONAN THE BARBARIAN that was pencilled by Barry Windsor-Smith.

I once suggested it would be fun to have several different artists tackle the same short story, without seeing each others work. At the time, I had in mind Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Joe Kubert, Neal Adams and John Buscema.
