A friend of mine had posted on FB an image of Sugar & Spike with this caption:
Coming next from DC's New 52, a "re-imagined" SUGAR AND SPIKE, co-starring Sugar, a feisty pole-dancing stripper and her boyfriend Spike, a lovable heroin junkie! (Sheldon Mayer, who's he?)

I said it wasn't far from the truth. Then, the next day Captain K'Rot was announced. This new 52 Captain Carrot is "a borderline psychotic, booze swilling, whore-mongering rabbit."

co-creator Scott Shaw had this to say: “As long as it’s not really Captain Carrot, I don’t care. If anything, I’m kinda amused by their rather lame attempt to fit an ‘edgy’ funny animal into the ‘New 52′ universe. Somehow, it reminds me of Warner Bros. Animation’s terrible LOONATICS UNLEASHED SatAM cartoon series. Where’s Ch’p, Thunderbunny, Jaxxon, Bucky O’Hare, Rocket Raccoon and Howard the Duck when we need ‘em?”

Motion blur: they might as well say "Our artist can't draw things that look as if they're moving."

A couple of decades back I commented that the direction DC seemed to be going (a "dark" Congorilla, for instance) made me wonder how long it would be before we saw something like THIS:

SHE is a streetwise hooker with a heart of gold. HE is her hard as nails pimp. TOGETHER they are... SUGAR AND SPIKE!

Then, about ten years ago, when the vampire craze was ramping up, I "pitched" (as a JOKE) teenaged Sugar and Spike as vampire hunters. Somewhat alarmingly, the only objection voiced was that the character name might create conflict with the BUFFY character, Spike.

DC = Devoid of Creativity.

Captain K'Rot seems like DC's warped answer to Rocket Racoon and Squirrel Girl over at Marvel.

...or using an artistic technique to convey an idea?

(Not to be read as a defense of Capt. K'Rot)

If I was the artist, having my work 'blurred' digitally (thereby obscuring the original work) to show 'speed' would piss me off!

I didn't mind the effect there. It makes me think of the effect they use in film when part of the scene is faded as to focus on another element in the scene.

It's so easy, isn't it?  Take a preexisting character and darken them up beyond all recognition.  Make them "edgy" and "hip" by introducing traits that the character has never possessed.  Coyly wink and nod at the previous incarnation while shitting on it at the same time. That takes no more effort than it took me to write this post.  It's all so tiresome and a huge reason why I got out of mainstream superhero comics several years ago.  If the companies don't care about these characters, then why should I.
