 QUOTE:
Now that the multiverse is back they should just go back to having the Earth-Two Hawkman being the Golden-Age version and the Earth-One Hawkman being his Silver-Age counterpart.

They have. Unfourtunately the DCU is based on Earth-0.

I'm kind of partial to the barbarian Hawkman. I won't try to deny it. A hawk is a hunter/predator, pretty deadly and a symbol of a warrior ethic. This is probably the only case where I think the DC "minds" made a good decision with a character. Hawkman is stronger as a character who battles with warrior bloodlust. Unlike Wolverine, he is intelligent at the same time. The nobility of intellect clashing with brute savagery appeals to me. Hawkman should be Namor with wings.

The only thing I disliked was the need to turn Carter Hall into a bit of a stalker of Hawkgirl, based on their reincarnated love throughout the ages. Hawkgirl denies him and he keeps giving her the "it's gonna happen, whether we want it to or not." And then Timm's JLA cartoon took that to the next level by making Hawkman a definitive stalker, which disappointed me as a cheap jab. Unless Timm's crew was merely mocking Johns/Robinson's portrayal, which might make sense. But still...somebody's first Hawkman was off of that cartoon. And he was made to look really, really bad.

Never felt a big love for Hawkman, but I really liked the Joe Kubert version. Reading what they did in the last 25 years with th character, I'm glad I haven't even touched a Hawkman book after the Kubert trade...!

Oh, the All-Star Squadron version was good, too. But I loved everyone in the Squadron, really.

The only time I came close to drawing that version of Hawkman was when I inked a Sergio Aragones WONDER WOMAN parody. Hawkman shows up on the last page (which now hangs on my Studio wall), and thanks to Sergio's amazing ability to distill things down to their essence, I saw immediately what a ridiculous configuration this was for a FLYING character -- all that STUFF hanging off him! Like designing a speedster who wears a cape and buccaneer boots!

I reckon that's true, JB. I just figure if Carter Hall has all that junk hanging on him, he's only flying to get to the battle. He won't be flying during it, which I guess does reinforce your point about a flying character.

Speaking of which, how many people would have a problem with Hawkman shucking the wings during a fight? Or Batman unclipping the old bat-cape during a tussel?

I've often wondered why Hawkman would keep his wings on in a big brawl, considering he doesn't really need them to fly so much as maneuver.

And Batman's cape is a weapon mostly in the dark. All the clunky wings/cape stuff maybe could get dumped for better fighting?

Chad, I fear you're skirting dangerously close to crossing that "too old to still be reading comics" line...
