It happened in three stages:
1. Rom (#?, towards the end). I was about 12 and, believe it or not, disliked the John Byrne art.
2. The Man of Steel TPB, bought while on vacation in La Jolla, California. I would have been 14 or 15 and had nothing against the art this time, but wasn't a fan yet either. Great overall reading experience, though.
3. OMAC #2. This was what made a fan. From there I gobbled up everything Byrne I could find, starting with She-Hulk #31 and Namor #20 which were on the shelves at the time. (I also still had my Man of Steel TPB to reevaluate!) I consider those my true "first John Byrne comics."

The revised version of that Avengers cover really pops. The all-white void really gives the impression that it's going to wipe the Avengers right off of the cover!

My mother bought me a double bag with this issue at Woolco. The first comic I ever kept.

FF #267. Having gotten into comics at age 9 in 1982 with G.I. Joe and then Spider-Man, I picked up this issue at the local 7-11 because of the Doctor Octopus arms on the cover (wanting to see a Spider-Man villian in a different comic). Wow, was I blown away by the mature storyline and unexpected ending! I quickly started following the FF (until shortly after JB's run when it went way downhill) and it became my all-time favorite title.

Avengers #181 John Byrne and Gene Day. I've read here that JB didn't really like Gene Day's inks over his pencils, but man, what a pretty book.

My first John Byrne was a Space 1999 issue, but I didn't know that for a loooong time after the fact.
The first time I knew I liked John Byrne art was when I realized he was the same artist I was loving on the XMen that I was also loving on Avengers and Marvel Team Up (I looked at the name in the credits) - though I did confuse him with George Perez sometimes when talking with friends.
I didn't follow him to Fantastic Four 'cause I never read the FF and wasn't into following artists so I didn't even know he was on FF.
I picked up Alpha Flight from #1 becuase it was Alpha Flight. I discovered through that book he was on FF and started reading FF. It was about this time I found out I John Byrne wrote comics, too.
The first comic book I ever bought BECAUSE John Byrne was on the book was MAN OF STEEL #1.
Picking up John Byrne comics because he's on the book has led me to some of the best comics I've ever read and also some I wish I could forget. But mostly I'm glad I learned who he was.

Rom (#?, towards the end). I was about 12 and, believe it or not, disliked the John Byrne art.
That's because it was over Ditko's pencils. By the early 80s Ditko's art had become really rubbish.

My first Byrne comic was Uncanny X-Men #142, pt. 2 of "Days of Futurepast". He has been my favorite artist ever since.

I found a scan of the Rom in question, #74:
I started reading Rom with #69 (Rom vs. Ego, the Living Planet!) and really liked Ditko's art in that issue. I was more disappointed by Ditko's art in Chuck Norris' Karate Commandos.
