If you're a fan of Don Newton, you should definitely try to pick up a copy of Back Issue #19, which has a nice retrospective on Mr. Newton's career.

Edit: And now that I post the cover, I see it also has a piece with Steve Gerber -- another creator who left us way too soon -- talking Howard the Duck with Gene Colan.  I'm going to have to pull this issue off my shelf and reread it when I get home from work tonight.

Don Newton is a favorite artist of mine.  I always enjoy just looking at his art, everything he drew looked great.  His art has such great motion, its what I liked best about his art.  Here a few examples I am proud to have.

   The name does ring a bell for me, although he might've slipped under the radar at the time because his work was showcased in comics which I had not been following back then.  It looks like he had a style all his own.  Ironically, he was born just a few years before my dad.

   Then again, looking at some of JB's fellow Charlton refugees and peers from Marvel and DC these days, I wonder if Don would've weathered the storms of today's comics industry?  Somehow, I think not.  Most of the artists that I grew up with have either gone into semi-retirement or have been pushed aside for newer, more "hip" talents...

Some of my fondest childhood comic book reading memories are the "Batman" and "SHAZAM!" stories Don Newton pencilled.  I loved his work.

The first script I sold to Charlton was illustrated by Pete Morisi.  The cover was this wonderful art by Don Newton.

Wrote a little too fast.  This was not based on my story, but another one in the same issue.
