Lots of people will say that JRjr drew the best this-character or that-
character, and it will be a mainstream hero. (Spider-Man, Thor, Daredevil,
etc.) But it's his secondary characters that really stand up to be counted. He
can take any secondary character and elevate them to main character status
just by imbuing them with that incredible sense of weight and height and
motion and reality he has.

For example, no one has ever drawn the Juggernaut better than JRjr.

I'm hoping for Jim Starlin, Frank Brunner, Dave Gibbons, Gary Frank, Frank
Miller, Butch Guice, Tom Grummett, and Phil Jimenez, among others, to be
showcased in Modern Masters.

Oh, and Paul Smith! He should have a Modern Masters book, too!

You know, that Avengers cover up there with Thor "comin' at ya" is very, very
"Kirby-esque."

I'd like to see Mark Buckingham or Sean Philips getting the Modern Masters treatment. They're both really great to talk to and of course the art helps.

<sigh>

I feel like the guy who is looking at the computer-generated 3D picture and just can't see the picture I am supposed to see when I hear someone compliment JR Jr.'s art.  I just don't get it.  I LOVE John Byrne's art and respect him tremendously, but I just don't understand how people can look at Romita Jr.'s art and find something complimentary about it.

I know I'm in the vast minority.  I wish maybe someone could sit me down someday and show me why it's good.  Maybe like a John Madden play by play demonstration.

To me, the human figures in JRJr.'s art are so out of proportion as to give Liefeld a run for his money.  Also, the faces completely lack any subtlety of expression, feet are usually hidden or cheated, costumes created are the most ridiculous ever seen and perspective is cheated or just plain wrong.  Panels are sometimes utterly devoid of any kinetic energy representation and then others contain too much action.

JRJr. was the reason I dropped Uncanny X-Men, and it's become a rule of thumb for about 20 years that I drop any book with him coming on it.  In fact, he might be the anti-Byrne for me as I DO pick up any book John Byrne IS on.

OK, my mommy told me to say something complimentary if I have said something negative:  I like what Bob Layton and Alfred Alcala did with JRJr.'s pencils.  JRJr. sure seems to make a lot of other people happy and that's good.  When he drew like his father, his Spider-Man was alright.

David, you're in luck. Bucky will be Volume 22 of Modern Masters, out next spring.

Brad, art is very subjective and I can understand when someone says they don't like JR's work. But to compare his sense of proportion to Liefeld's is just wrong. Yes, JR exaggerates proportion — everyone in comics does. But, unlike Liefeld, he maintains a consistent sense of proportion from panel to panel, issue to issue. There is an internal logic to it that fits the world he creates. You may not like his sense of proportion, and that's fine; I have no problem with that. But please don't compare him to Liefeld.

As for why I think he's great, his figures have the weight and gravitas of Buscema's, and the energy and power of Kirby's. His drawings have life in them. But most importantly he is great at pacing a story and knows exactly what to emphasize in order to give the most impact to the story.

You say he cheats, and perhaps he does at times. But here's a quote from the book to consider:

MM: During your X-Men days, you were doing three pages a day.
JOHN: It varies. Some pages took longer, but I averaged two to three pages a day. And it was because I was doing breakdowns, number one, but my breakdowns were tight. It's just, like I said, I didn't really have a choice. I wasn't going to complain to anybody. I was happy to get the work, and I just followed orders. I did my job and didn't complain.

Maybe someone can post some interior pages and we can discuss it further.

Like Brad I didnt like his art on his X-Men run and dropped the book, BUT his Daredevil run opened my eyes to what he does best and previous posters including Eric Nolen-Weathington hit the nail on the head with their comments.

I have been a HUGE fan since Daredevil and even have in my possession NINE PAGES of JRjr art from Spiderman to Hulk to Thor.
