I remember the first time I saw the Cockrum model sheet for Phoenix.  I was amazed at the subtle differences between JB's rendition of Phoenix and Cockrums.  I've always like both artists take on her.  I loved that JB took most of the gathering out of the sash and the fantastic way he changed the chest emblem and clasp, but I wish that he had kept the center seam that was presented in the Cockrum version.  When I draw her, I try to marry both of the styles to make my own mistress of the power incarnate.

I never realized how LONG Phoenix' legs were as drawn by Dave.  Not anotomically correct, but attractive and sexy anyway.

I would love to see the other character sheets he did, if he did them.

Cockrum was my first artist I was exposed to on Uncanny X-Men.  At first I preferred his renditions over Byrne's, especially Dave's Colossus and Nightcrawler. 

But after a while, I found I preferred Byrne's art over ALL other artists (except, perhaps, Neal Adams). 

The reason starting with the fact that I quickly grew to LOVE Byrne's women:  Storm, Phoenix, Lorna Dane, Susan Storm, Scarlet Witch, etc.  The guys fell in behind that.

Plus, no one every drew a better Scott Summers.  Ever.
