I spotted a local cable TV sports talk show host at the supermarket last summer.I must have stared at him. He looked like he simply wanted to pick up some milk and get out of there. So I remembered your "Off Duty" idea, and smiled without stopping or saying anything to him. •• It is unfortunate that some fans cannot recognize when a pro is "off duty" without being told. Frank Miller and I have both had the experience of books for signing being shoved under men's room stall doors, as if there is any situation that more clearly declares "off duty"! Conventions seem to breed this. There are a lot of fans who simply don't want to be bothered by the notions of when a Con opens and closes. I have been approached by people seeking autographs when I was eating breakfast, when I was walking across the parking lot, when I was passing the line waiting to get in, heading for my table. And, of course, there are those people who think "closed for the day" applies only to lesser beings. Once, late one evening, in the hotel bar, I was, uhm, intimately engaged with my girlfriend (nothing X-Rated!) when I felt a tap on my shoulder, and turned to find the living avatar of the Comic Shop Guy thrusting a bagged book at me. "Could you sign this? I have to get up to my room."
