Don't feel too bad. I didn't realize it, either, until I opened this thread and saw the cover. How I missed it all these years, I don't know.

I spotted a local cable TV sports talk show host at the supermarket last summer.

I must have stared at him. He looked like he simply wanted to pick up some milk and get out of there.

So I remembered your "Off Duty" idea, and smiled without stopping or saying anything to him.

••

It is unfortunate that some fans cannot recognize when a pro is "off duty" without being told. Frank Miller and I have both had the experience of books for signing being shoved under men's room stall doors, as if there is any situation that more clearly declares "off duty"!

Conventions seem to breed this. There are a lot of fans who simply don't want to be bothered by the notions of when a Con opens and closes. I have been approached by people seeking autographs when I was eating breakfast, when I was walking across the parking lot, when I was passing the line waiting to get in, heading for my table. And, of course, there are those people who think "closed for the day" applies only to lesser beings. Once, late one evening, in the hotel bar, I was, uhm, intimately engaged with my girlfriend (nothing X-Rated!) when I felt a tap on my shoulder, and turned to find the living avatar of the Comic Shop Guy thrusting a bagged book at me. "Could you sign this? I have to get up to my room."

I think the standard response to a comic being shoved under a restroom stall door, should be the sound of the comic being crumpled, followed by  'Gee,thanks...how'd you know there was no toilet paper in here?'

It may seem like common sense not to bother a professional, but some of us haven’t absorbed a common sense through cultural osmosis like the rest of you, and would appreciate having it spelled out for us. For example, if every convention printed in the program book the protocols for approaching professionals, it would remove the ambiguity we feel when torn between wanting to not bother a professional, and wanting to not miss our chance to have the honour of meeting the professional and congratulating them on their work. We could just follow the rules and remain secure in the knowledge that we weren’t upsetting our heroes.

Evidently, I’ve been lucky enough to meet only those professionals who are gracious in allowing their fans to approach them; I’ve walked over to professionals in hallways at conventions, lurked long enough to make I wasn’t interrupting them, gently said “Excuse me...” and politely asked for their autograph or permission to take a photo, and they’ve all responded positively. Or I’ve sensed which ones I would be interrupting, and have not approached them, in which case I’ve absorbed more common sense than I thought I have. I think I would have preferred to have the rules made explicit when I was half my current age, though.

I loved the visual for Sasquatch.

••

I know I have previously revealed my "inspiration" for his look…

Ha! I remember you posting that before. When someone posted this pic over in the "Troll" thread, I almost posted after that, "Sasquatch!"
