I've been reading Showcase House of Mystery & Showcase Phantom Stranger, this has reminded me of the old horror comics I used to read as a kid. Did any of you guys ever read them, and if so what were your favorites?

I enjoyed Tomb of Dracula and Werewolf by Night, but Supernatural Thrillers and Frankenstein's Monster/the Monster of Frankenstein were good too.

I'm really surprised that horror comics aren't more common and popular today.  I can understand why certain genres fell out of favor -- westerns, war -- but I can't see any reason why horror comics couldn't compete well with superheroes.

I miss these old Horror comics, I've bought all four volumes of Essential Dracula, Essential Werewolf by Night, and Essential Frankenstein's Monster. also the two Showcase volumes I mentioned in my first post (haven't found House of Mystery vol.1 yet) But I'm hoping that DC will do a Showcase Ghosts & House of Secrets as well. As a boy my first love were the Super-Hero comics, but I think the "spooky" horror comics were a close second.

Yep! I have Essential Man-Thing as well! Great series, strange now that I think of it, but I never read Swamp Thing other than in this issue of DC Comics Presents.

???  Horror comics are actually very popular.  In fact, 30 days of night was a "hit" and is coming out as a movie.

When I was a kid my Grandfather had a collection of the old Warren Eerie and Creepy horror comics. I used to nag my parents to let me look at them - and when I did, they'd always give me nightmares.

I also remember the British Alan Class black-and-white reprint comics, with art by Ditko, Kirby and others.

I loved the EC stuff. (It was reprinted over here when I was a teenager.) Also I read some stuff cherry picked from DC's mystery titles, the original Swamp Thing book (I even loved the Redondo issues), some Aparo Phantom Stranger and a lot of horror stuff by Nino, Alcala and other filipino artists that I think was from the DC books. Also I managed to get hold of some Warren reprints (including some in spanish.)

Some great horror stories. More "literary" than the "Half-naked, oversexed 18 year-olds in the woods pursued by maniac" genre that dominates horror these days. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I'm just waiting for the "Showcase : house of secrets/Swamp Thing/etc" and for someone to give the Warren horrors and EC the "Essential" treatment. That would be nice.
