Hi Mr. Byrne, big fan of your work!

Since you’ve written both Superman (DC) and Gladiator
(Marvel) and exchanged ideas between them, I have a few
questions:

1) Do you see them as essentially the same powerhouse
character across different publishers, or are they
fundamentally different in power level?

2) Once you said Gladiator is Pre-Crisis Superman level—
would you say he’s equal, stronger, or weaker than Pre-
and Post-Crisis Superman?

3) Could Gladiator perform all Superman’s feats,
including metaphysical ones like holding up the heavens?

4) If you were writing a solo Gladiator series, who would
be his greatest enemy?

Thanks so much for your time and insight!

How do you see Gladiator compared to Superman in terms of
power and essence? Are there any limits he wouldn’t be
able to overcome?

I speak, text, write or otherwise interface for myself.

Questions should be constructed for a "Yes" or "No" response to be sufficient.

Avoid the words "simple", "easy", "just" and any other synonym which minimizes what I or someone else has contributed or will contribute.

If you what to have a conversation, lead with "Tell me about how ..."

If you don't have a relationship with me or someone, preface the topic with "Can i engage you in a conversation about...?"

If the topic is complicated, provide background, your own thoughts and suppositions or premise. By doing so, you might find the answer.

As I noted, Gladiator is pretty much the Silver Age Superman. I think that covers it.

Hi Adaildo,

I was having some fun drawing Gladiator recently. Drawing really gives me time to let my mind drift.

I was considering the 'fit' for the character in the Marvel Universe. Which was also fun.

There is a great comic that John did The FF #247 that always makes me think about self will and perception.
I think it demonstrates everything you need to really know to get the character.

I don't think I have seen anywhere that Gladiator is in anyway weakened by rocks from his home planet, or any more or less susceptible to magic that a regular human. The first of these alone would give him a significant advantage over DC's Legend.

Anyway. Thanks for bringing up the subject.

(EDIT - Please delete this post if it breaks etiquette. I felt that once JB had answered, maybe the topic would be open to the forum.)

Thank you, Darren! Interesting point about weaknesses.

One thing I've noticed - many fans think Gladiator loses
confidence against powerful foes, but that doesn't match
what actually happens in Marvel lore.

I have more questions about this, but I'm still learning
forum etiquette. I'll save them for future topics!

I imagine the mohawk is kind of a pain in the neck to draw? Not Havok's headgear difficult, but not something you'd want to draw for 22 pages over 100 issues.

Most readers from 43 years ago had taken this page as Gladiator's "Kryptonite". Many writers have used this as their way to "de-power" him.

....and they might use Gladiator's facial expression and "...NO." quote from this panel to reaffirm it today.
