I recall from AF15 that the spider dies almost immediately after biting PP, but I remember seeing a re-telling of his origin where Peter treads on the spider to kill it after that pivotal moment.
That always seemed like a very un-Peter Parker like thing to do!

Yes, Stan described the bite as the spider’s dying action.

I treasure the story where Spider-Man is trapped under a ton of debris in a room filling with water and all he can do is reflect on his life.
When he musters what it takes to lift that debris and go on living, I figure THAT is how strong he is-- just strong enough to do that when his life depends on it.

Andy what a classic sequence that is, from ASM 33.
Stan & Steve knocked it out of the park.

Michael: Over forty years ago, it seemed to be a thought that Spider-Man was a "super medium-weight."
**
That ranking puts Spider-Man, She-Hulk, and The Silver Surfer in the "same" category.
That seems wildly incorrect. In every respect!

It was some wackadoodle grouping!
(But one example of many things-gone-wrong back then that led me to drop comicbooks as a hobby.)

I think (like regular humans) if he focuses, he's much stronger, has more awareness and (like fighters) can take a punch better when they see it coming. So in battle, he's at peak abilities. When relaxed, he can be caught off guard - even with the spidey-sense.
Spiders also go from 0 to 100%. They literally use hydraulics and have explosive bursts of speed. It probably seems like immense power to the onlooker.
And then my biggest thought is Spider-Man is their flagship character. And sometimes comics feels like two six-year-olds arguing about who can beat who. And most companies probably want their flagship character to do well and so- boost the levels a bit, when needed.

I like strong enough to lift a car with difficulty. I like the idea that he's always cracking jokes and jumping around while fighting hoods so he can get better pictures to sell to the Bugle!

I remember being a kid and reading JB's "Everyone against Galactus" issue of FF. I was mad that he had Spider-Man sitting on the sidelines with Daredevil with them thinking they weren't heavy enough hitters for this one.
Cut to several years later when I saw the issue where Spider-Man beat up Firelord single-handed. I thought to myself "You know, John Byrne had it right."
