another random question, but possibly related to this thread:

With your wonderfully brilliant ability to create or evolve characters, did you ever come up with a new code name for Jean?  (Seems like writers always struggled giving Jean a suitable code name)

I guess later writers could not go back to Marvel Girl. Of course, we don't know if she would even need a code name in this story and i like it that way.

For me, Marvel Girl works at least as well as Phoenix. Seems fine, so long as folks actually use it!

50 years+ on it seems too late to be switching to a brand new name and to be expecting it to carry any weight, even if the name was dynamite (Psynamite, there I did it).

More interested to see what JB does with the character -- and with Scott in her eventual orbit, perhaps -- than worrying about renaming one of Marvel's best heroines.

What a pity that Marvel Girl was not, like the Invisible Girl, (re-)made into a Woman of much more heightened power without resorting to a storyline that ended up destroying her and, it seems to me ultimately, perhaps the X-Men as a franchise as well.

JB's evolution of Sue Storm during his run was a brilliant and organic flow of character development that pushed the boundaries of female characters in the 80s.  It would have been amazing to see the same kind of process applied to Jean

As most of you know, Jean’s exposure to cosmic rays (tac tac tac) was intended as nothing more than a boost of her existing powers. Something to make her a more serious member of the group. Unfortunately, Chris wrote her bigger and bigger until the X-Men were in danger of becoming guest stars in their own book. That was when Steven Grant spoke the words that will live in infamy: “Make her a villain.”

As a kid, I knew Jean wasn't going to be a permanent member of the X-Men cause she didn't have her head in the corner box (and I was so sad when Banshee's vanished from it)
