“Shadowcat” showed up, as I recall, around the time of publication of Robert Heinlein’s novel THE CAT WHO WALKED THROUGH WALLS.

Original art question - are these going to be inked on the page, or inked via overlay? And will Jim be selling pages at some point in the future?

•••

I’ve asked that they be shot to blue line for inking.

And, yes, whatever happens Jim will eventually be selling the pages.

Before anyone gets too excited, remember there is an 800lb gorilla in the room.

I’d love to see these X-Men fight the Red Ghost!

Shadowcat was Kitty's codename around the time I started really getting into comics, so I just accepted the name back then. Reflecting on it, I'm not sure the name has ever made any sense to me. It would serve the character better, I think, to be codenamed Sprite, not just in the context of Elsewhen, but every when.

Also, reading JB's brief excerpt from his script above (and the panels we have seen) makes me realise how much more fun this original, creator's-intent version of the character is (and sorta briefly was) than the character she very quickly ended up morphing into.

The French version of Sprite for some time was "étincelle" which means Spark ! Well Nighcrawler was Diablo (which was a problem) Storm was Tornade and Wolverine was Serval which is a totally different animal ( a small cheetah-related feline from Africa !). Then LUG  decided to stop translating names. Anyway Kitty's name was a problem both in the original and French version. It's funny how it was difficult to find a good name for such a great character...maybe because her civilian name was so perfect...Are there other examples ?

I thought turning Marvel Girl into "Phoenix" was brilliant because it fit much better with the mythological theme of the other original X-Men like Cyclops and Angel (with Iceman and Beast close enough).  Likewise, "Sprite" fit in just right.  "Shadowcat" made no sense!  (Good name for an 80's martial arts movie though!)

John I've an art question related to these pages: do you use some kind of fixative on the pencils to preserve them after they're done?

If I do end up selling the pencil pages, I’ll probably use a heavy fixative to prevent them being inked.

Well. I admit Reed's arms are kinda long, there...

…Sprite for some time was "étincelle" which means Spark…

••

My dictionary says "elf or fairy" for "sprite". Is there no equivalent in French?

+++

Wolverine was Serval

••

I learned this from a French reprint I saw in Canada. I immediately wanted to create a character called Serval, just to mess with the French translators!

Speaking of the Red Ghost...

Something Roy Thomas introduced was the term "non-mutant variant" This was a handy phrase to describe the likes of the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Hulk, and others who had been changed by some accidental exposure to radiation.* (So not Dr, Strange or Iron Man, for instance).

The Red Ghost would be a non-mutant variant (as would his Super Apes).

Unfortunately, the term was almost immediately forgotten. But I plan to bring it back in this "series".
