I've been looking a lot at the old issues, in ESSENTIAL form, and I'm surprised to see the degree to which Terry was redrawing. Subtle stuff. Like in how he and I take a different approach to building a face and head, and in the inked pages I can often see more of Terry than me.

Back in those days was it common to xerox pencils before the pages were inked? I would love to compare pencils vs. inks.

Back in those days was it common to xerox pencils before the pages were inked? I would love to compare pencils vs. inks.•• Altho it was common practice, in my Calgary days, when all the UNCANNY X-MEN issues where drawn, I did not have easy access to photocopying.

It does raise the question, is it even possible to ink pencils without at
least some element of redrawing taking place, either deliberately or
unconsciously.

The tools used by an inker create so many different lines that the penciler cannot achieve. That's why years, nay, decades ago, I stopped trying! I make the line my pencil makes, and hope the inker understands what that line means. (This is where it can be bad if one ends up with an inker who does not understand texture!)

that page from 129 is just a reminder that there needs to be a original X-Men reunion book drawn by you...I'd love to know how you would've "de-furred" Beast and brought everyone together.
And didn't you "evolve" your art style when you started the Alpha Flight monthly. I remember reading some interview with you regarding that

Your faces are much more expressive, the poses more dynamic, the backgrounds much more detailed, as is the way to lay out a page, than all those years ago.

Anyone have pencils from issue 143 to compare to those Kitty pages from Elsewhen? I looked over the recently released Artifact Edition AFTER the Elsewhen pages were released and to be honest I didn't see much difference at a glance between the inked pages from X-Men #143 and the pencils on Elsewhen. I didn't do a side by side comparison, but I do remember thinking "THAT looks familiar" when I was looking at the Artifact Edition pages.

JB, your current work on Dr. Doom is a great example of how far your pencil work has changed for the better. The textures are one of the key changes.

This UXM129 page is...perfect, and Terry just had (and fortunately did) to follow your lines...
As far as Elsewhen is concerned, and as you had and took your time for a few tinkering...let's start by saying again this is great stuff, but I can find two (yes only two among the best comic I have seen in ages) weak panels...much much below the quality of the others, JB, forgive the lèse majesté but what do you (and all of you) think of :
Page 10...this is still not your Jean's face (that nose ?!)
Page 13, 3rd panel, Colossus looks more as if he is falling from the cliff than taking his momentum. What about a two feet landing ?
