I get it. But you gotta understand that from the outside as a tween reading these books, I thought Marvel/DC were perfect organizations, top to bottom. I'm just having a hard time wrapping my brain around the idea that these were offices as dysfunctional as my own. These peeks behind the curtain always have a certain shattering of my idealized conception.

Remember the FF Byrne collections in the aughts? There was one that completely botched the final pages of the 1983 Annual 17 where it was a blurry mess and Marvel just sent it out that way. Yeah, maybe fixing the error would have been costly... but c'mon.

Maybe they plan to fix that faulty issue where everything was accidentally printed sideways?
I jest, of course… but it’s exactly the sort of thing that wouldn’t surprise me.

JB, what’s the story behind that sideways issue?

So, looking at the digital preview, which is lower res than a Kindle version, I can see improvements to the art presentation from the Visionaries version. When Ben is inside the bubble, the art is much clearer in this new print. I’ve not gone further at the moment, but it does look like there is better presentation. The colours are pretty much the same though.

Thanks, James! When it comes to colors, the only way to really know is to see a physical copy of the book (or direct photograph of). That's one of the problems with modern reprint collections; it feels like they prep stuff to maximize screen presentation, without placing nearly as much care on the print-ready files.
When the trade market first started taking off in the 90's, publishers clearly didn't know how to handle the paper change - whiter and slicker, which made things pop in ways that even Baxter paper didn't. They did start to adjust for that, but then the digital distribution model came in and (I suspect) there wasn't the incentive to really manage two full sets of files for any given volume, each one tailored to the specific strengths and limitations of the media.
What's especially annoying is that this feels like an issue almost unique to the American comics industry. From what I've seen of European and Japanese volumes, they know how to make a beautiful reprint product.
EDITED TO ADD: Ha! I just realized this same point was just made over at the Trek comic thread.

I prefer more of a matted paper style. I love the original comic paper used for so long, as it worked well with shadows, etc. But, alas, the acid paper deterioration doesn't make them look as great as the years go by.
I like the paper DC uses for its facsimiles. Kind of a happy medium.

I prefer matte over glossy as well. There were some hardcover JKFW books that had paper I really liked.

I also vastly prefer matte. Glossy stock trades have real wallet-closing power to me. But unfortunately (as B. Kliban noted), it’s really the only show in town for a lot of books you really, really want.
