... I have only recently checked out L.A. Confidential and checked to see if there was a previous thread about it (it's closed) ...
But did anyone else pick up a major Cyclops/Wolverine vibe between Guy Pearce's and Russell Crow's characters?

Russell Crow, the flinty and experienced tool of the system and Guy Pierce, the newly arrived by-the-book upstart who turns the entire L.A. Police force upside down?

It feels a bit a mix-up. Wolverine was the newcomer and Cyclops was the vet when they met on the X-Men.

Interesting take, sticking strictly to the plot and the actual character arcs, that's good insight.
My impression came more from their interactions and their temperament, their clashing and their collaboration, and to some degree their look and manner.

p.s. apologies for this post not appearing in the movies section.

I see what you mean. More recent X-Men (say, the last 20 years or so)
definitely portray Wolverine like the Russel Crow character. And Cyclops
does seem to be an the perpetual “come back trail” which could echo the
rising Guy Pierce character.

But the last 20 years of X-men has been pretty dire.

Well, that's a whole 'nother can of worms, especially since the movie is more than 20 years old.
I know the impression was somewhat superficial, but Exley's clean cut look (especially when he had issues being able to see without his glasses!), his cool strategist/tactician, contrasting with Bud's barely controlled rage, and how they came to have a begrudging respect for each other's approach, is what struck me.
Interestingly Mark, I am surprised your take ignored who ultimately gets the girl :)

That's an interesting takeaway, Ron. Been several years since I've seen the movie. But Russell Crowe's character seemed to have his passions barely in check, while Guy Pearce's was more aloof and analytical. Their methods inevitably clashed when they worked together. And they were both  attracted to the same woman.

Actually, the characters of Jack and Sawyer in LOST very much reminded me of the Scott/Logan dynamic.

Lol! That is SO the modern conception of Wolverine/Cyclops.

The Wolverine/Jean/Cyclops "love triangle" feels so utterly ridiculous to me. It's like a practical joke that was played on an unsuspecting world just to troll fans of the original ANAD X-Men.

I'm sure you're right, but I'm simply referring to the original dynamic that Jean was Scott's love and there was implied hints of attraction between she and Logan, never acted upon, while Bud had the relationship with Lynn that Exley was complicating.
I plead ignorance to what has happened in the 40+ years since the Scott/Logan dynamic was first portrayed, save for the Fox movies (don't go there, please).
