That's a revelation to me, and makes perfect sense. Thanks guys.
That style always bugged me in an odd way (except Michael Golden whose work was sort of weirdly fascinating---but as a outlier, not the norm). Seems like all the little hash-lines are an attempt at shading, but in a not photo-realistic way. An example of style taking over the underlying form. Especially with muscles, it's like they are constantly drawing the "Anatomical Man" without skin (plus a bunch of crazy lines in the face).
Yeah...maybe that's what it is---really loose shading done in a way to imply texture. I can see now were Golden might have opened the door for this.
Perhaps JB would be kind enough to explain the origin of the label: "proto?"

Perhaps JB would be kind enough to explain the origin of the label: "proto?"•• Sorry to hear your web-search function doesn't work. proto- /ˈprōdō/ combining form prefix: proto-; prefix: prot- original or primitive. "prototherian" first; anterior; relating to a precursor.

"Gladiator has arrived." Has he ever!
And Jean's not giving him an inch. I love her expression in the last panel.

The removal of subplots messed up my page order a bit. This splash of Gladiator was meant to be on the left hand page of a published version of this, so an even number. Something the reader would have to turn to for the reveal. Not that I could ever control what ad sales did with the pages. Just set up what I wanted and keep my fingers crossed.

I'm loving the 4 pages in a row of my favorite redhead! I'm guessing the guard do indeed know who it is *they* are dealing with...

On the subject of Jean's hair, the sharp eyed amongst you may have noticed I used her down time to change her style, relying on Google to provide me with something a little more up-to-date. Found this, which suited my needs nicely:
And, no, she's not naked!!

Went to look at the new page. Hit back on my brower. Paused. Went back to look at the new page some more.
That cape! And the hand clasping the cape. And Jean's face at the bottom. Beautiful art!

Mr. Byrne, I apologize for my dense skull...but I just can't parse "proto-Image".
Original-image? Primitive-image?
Sorry to dwell on your off-handed remark, but I think if I understand your perspective on how comic art swerved --- I might understand better what it is that I so admire about your style. What was lost, so to speak. What precisely was the mental shift (early 1990's) in the industry with regards to art? Was it conscious? Perhaps there's a better venue/thread, if you are inclined to elaborate.
Thank you for today's gorgeous page and "...rattles windows for blocks". Powerful prose indeed!
I agree with Martin, Jean has never looked better.

Gladiator looks majestic on this page. Using the cape as a means to show him floating - just so cool

Gladiator could defeat the X-Men all by his lonesome, so even knowing the good guys usually win in the end, I don't like their odds.

I still think Professor X could unravel Gladiator pretty handily.
