Speaking of Scott,

1. In Elsewhen, will you continue Scott's growth towards stepping out from Xavier's control / shadow?  (didn't know if the seeds of that came from you or Chris)

2.  Xavier has Magneto, Wolverine has Sabretooth, who would Scott's archenemy be?

In terms of costume designs representing code names, I feel anything that focuses on the "one-eyed" aspect of Cyclops and minimizes everything else seems like the appropriate approach. The open-top hair detracts from that.

Hmm. That's not exactly how I view Magneto...

Interested in hearing JB's answer on this.

Magneto is as much Scott’s foe as he is Xavier’s.

At the risk of seeming grumpy—which I never am—your questions seem designed to pull out as much info as possible before this book is published. I think from now on you can plug in a standard answer: wait and see.

Man, I do miss the purely evil Magneto of the old days. He was once the symbol of everything the X-Men existed to fight against--a mutant determined to use his powers to subjugate humanity.

Watering him down into Doctor Doom Lite did the character no favors, even if it did give fans wanting to show off how "sophisticated" comics were a talking point to grab the attention of the normies ("Look! Professor X is MLK, and Magneto is Malcolm X! This is deep stuff!").

I think what watered him down further was sticking Magneto on the team!

I haven't followed the X universe in quite a while, but I hated that trend Marvel went through (still going through?) where all the X-Men's villains not only became good guys, but they actually got a spot on the team or trained to be on it!

It was well thought out when it was done with Rogue, to the point where it's almost been forgotten that she started out as one of the bad guys. But Magneto, Sabretooth, Juggernaut, Mystique and the White Queen? That's the whole rogue's gallery!

Who do they even fight anymore? Oh, that's right- Cyclops. SMH.

I don't know if putting Rogue on X-Men counts as "thought out" -- To me, it
seems more a case of reversing course early enough in her history that
readers who noticed could more or less forgive how inconsistent it was with
where she started.

I personally had a hard time with that and considered it a sign that the
story-wheels had started falling off the series. I stopped reading X-Men
pretty soon after she showed up.

RE: MAGNETO -- One great thing about Magneto is how quickly and easily
he slid back into evil shape when JB wrote him into West Coast Avengers.
He is a terrific villain and a memorable part of that excellent (and tragically
shortened) run.

I agree. I believe the same can be said about most team books -- for example: Dr. Doom and the FF. Sure, Doom has a personal history with Reed, but Doom is a foe of the Fantastic Four.

++++++++++

A highly underrated run!

Magneto is a lesson not only in how far—and how fast—a character can be run off the rails, but the extreme degree with which some fans will embrace the changes.

When I was starting up on HIDDEN YEARS word got out that the Magneto seen there would be the ruthless S.O.B. he’d been at that vintage—and that Stan and Jack created—and I was hammered online by those who defended his “freedom fighter” status. It mattered not a jot that Chris, in portraying him that way, was ignoring all that had gone before—including what Chris himself had written!

(I’ve mentioned before that when we were working together Chris would often call me with dramatic readings of his latest dialog, and whenever Magneto was in the scene Chris would switch to a cackling Wicked Witch of the West voice. Years later, after Magneto’s “rehabilitation” I often asked if he still sounded like that!)

Luckily I wasn't tainted with any "rehabilitated" Magneto stories, sounds perfectly awful.
Like I've said many times over, I always feel safe reading JB offerings he keeps characters close to their source. My anticipation is palpable for an Elsewhen tale featuring Magneto.
