Thank you for your answer, Philippe. Yep, as I say, I

I really had a kick at it, so I may try to ink the
other pages. You will see the results after several
lunchtime breaks !JB, to answer your question, I
enlarged the photo to fit in a final A4 size print
version at 300dpi. As it is digital, I can zoom in all
the way I want. Of course, it becomes pixel-ed when I
do, but it is still confortable to work with.As for
the time on it, I will say a total of 2h20...

If you have a nice fighting scene of your traditional
Superman in pencils somewhere on your computer, please
post it. I will love to try inking it. My favorite
Superhero by my favorite artist ! Would be a dream !

As a man whose talents (such as they are) fall far away from the visual arts, I'm really enjoying this thread!

 | Well, if we're still playing amateur week here's my shot at the splash page. It was worth it just to have a crack at working on the vegetation and foliage, which is one of the aspects of the chief's art I love best. Cheers all!

“You folk who are inking this... Are you enlarging it to 10x15 inches?”

Sort of... I created a 300dpi 11x17 canvas in Procreate, pasted the image into a layer, and then upscaled (and skewed in the second case) the image so that the whole page fit the 11x17. Then after I was done, I trimmed it down to the dashed blue lines. |

Knowing that you’ve preferred inkers who are faithful to the pencils, how does that apply to looser pencils that leave more interpretation to the inker?
It’s interesting to see how the wing in the upper left is being interpreted by people so far. I Like Eric Ladd’s approach a lot, but wondered how much that crosses into full on embellishment?
(I think there is some rationale in the choice, personally, in that he’s picking up on the pattern of lines established in the wing on the lower right, and pulling that over to the wing on the top left). |

Pencils vary a lot from artist to artist. Some produce line work that is so sharp it can be printed without inks. Some produce tonal qualities that could not be reproduced with standard processes. And, of course, everything in between.

 | Inkers also have a lot of approaches. There are those who consider themselves "tracers", and who expect every line the penciler puts on the page to be exactly the line that's wanted for the finished product. Then, there are inkers who consider themselves "embellishers", and who ink in their own style, no matter who the penciler might be. The best inkers are the ones who fall somewhere in the middle. The ones who understand that a pencil is not a brush or a pen, and that the penciler is expecting the inker to bring to the page a selection from his tool kit -- but not to the extent that the inks are overpowered. Inkers, like pencilers, change over the years. Sometimes ego overwhelms. One who I have worked with went from fidelity to my pencils to completely redrawing them. (He also inked one of the best pencilers in the Biz, and redrew him, too!) So the best inking, I guess, would be fidelity with flair! (Let's skip the OFFICE SPACE "jokes", okay?)

Since it seems to be OK to ink these pages, I decided to give it a try.

In some parts it was a bit tricky to tell what was going on because of the low-res pencils file, so I had to be "creative". For that same reason, I didn't ink the background on the first panel.

It took me about two hours to finish and it was fun all the way! If only I could do it everyday... :)
