I started buying the USA versions shortly after 137. Well, probably a year
after, as I remember hunting down back issues over various newsagents -
these being the Wendigo and Days of Future Past (had to get the second
part through mail order).
The UK was about a year/year and a half behind with its reprints, so by the
time we got to Dark Phoenix, its legendary status had happened. I ended up
getting 136 and 137 in that hunting process.

Just one month until the release of Elsewhen!  I don't think I've looked forward to a release this much since ... I don't know when.  I love getting original JB content.  I am truly thrilled.

UNCANNY 137, based on what I was told at the time, did around 175,000. The highest number we’d seen since the relaunch. And that was without any marketing push. After all, there was really no way to promote something nobody knew was coming, not even the people who worked on it! The fans knew only that it would wrap up the Dark Phoenix storyline and be double sized.

This is something few understand who were not there at the time. The Death of Phoenix was one of Marvel’s first EVENTS—maybe even THE first—and as time has passed more and more have come to think it was PLANNED that way. And have tried to duplicate that flash of lightning in a bottle.”

It’s been a long time since Grant Morrison’s run on New X-Men, but even back then Jean Grey was reborn for the umpteenth time and Beast mused “Why can’t they ever just leave her dead?”
