Jaxon dying made Mac's death even worse. He had completely won! And then.....

I checked the issue in question, and they only made reference to taking the costume, but they didn't say anything about what they did with the remains of Courtney. There's an opportunity to make the "resurrected" Guardian be Courtney all along, somehow. And though it would be a bit cockamamie, it would actually be less so than the one that Fabian Nicieza actually tried to use - since his explanation was impossible.

Now that I think about it - I believe Bill Mantlo hinted that Jaxon was still alive but never followed up on it...

Comparing the Heather we ended up with in ALPHA FLIGHT to the Heather shown in ELSEWHEN (with a very much alive Mac), I'm good with Mac being gone.

•••

You LIKED what they did to Heather?

---------------------------------------------

I liked Heather becoming a strong leader because of what she had gone through. I liked who you were having her become.

*Keep in mind that ALPHA ended with issue 28 in my world.

JB's last issue of Alpha Flight was my first. I thought Heather's role as the unsuper leader of a superteam was so damn interesting. I was relatively new to reading comics, and it stood out as a unique take.

While conducting research for this post, I realized that Mac died and Heather took over as leader in comics with June to December 1984 cover dates, while over in X-Men, Storm lost her powers in a story running September to December 1984; about a year later she became the team's official, non-powered leader.

JB, do you know if you had an influence on that X-Men storyline?
