I always loved that OP image. It shows off the different heights and the difference between Sasquatch and Puck is astounding.

JB, how soon after his death did the idea of his “return” come to you?

The thing that shocked me the most about it, was the in story circumstances of how it happened. It felt very realistic and cruel, in the way that real life (and death) often can be. That unfortunate distraction at a crucial moment, leading to unspeakable tragedy? Yeah, that stuck with me for a long, long time. Poor Heather.
(On the more positive side, that's some beautiful artwork in the advertisment. The whole team looks so great there.)

JB, how soon after his death did the idea of his “return” come to you?••• It was there all along. The only question was when to spring it.

If I may gush over this for a moment. I pass this every time I head upstairs from my basement office. I pat myself on the back for thinking to go with grey tones for the scene. I intentionally went with a grey felt matte to complement it. But it only recently dawned on me that JB ran with it and reimagined the scene as a horror comic, and that's friggin brilliant!

Love what it does for the texture of the sweater, the jeans and the granite ...

Vinny, that picture is gorgeous. Wow.
I was only 13 at the time of the fake return in issue 25, but there was a tiny thought at the back of my head that found it interesting that Guardian's resurrection was not the subject of a double issue (which we'd just had the issue before and in 1985, double-sized meant it was a big deal) but just a regular-sized one. And then the next issue comment at the bottom of the letter column in 25 that all but said "it's not real."
I still cannot try and pronounce the name of that alien race who "saved" him though he did say it was impossible.

The return of Guardian was a rare time I was disappointed not to have fans jumping down my throat. I had SO deliberately contradicted the scenario of his death. As I’ve said in the years since, I guess the fans were just so eager to have him back, they were ready to accept anything. Even Mantlo’s version!

Pure speculation on my part, but my guess is it was no picnic with the fans for any writers and artists picking up a book after you've left.
