I wonder what would happen if Biden shot Trumf on 5th Avenue?

America would be the better for it.

"I wonder what would happen if Biden shot Trumf on 5th
Avenue?"

**

"And there was much rejoicing"

But seriously, civil war, or something like it.

If Trump loses, I hope there's one big honking difference between Jan 6th and whatever happens:

Armed guards inside, with full authorization to use force against any rioters who get in.

More deaths on either side is about the only thing that would be worse than what we got on Jan 6.

Notice that there has been no repetition of Sept 11. That event was only possible because no one was prepared for it. Now we know what to watch for.

Jan 6 was equally unanticipated. It’s highly unlikely that such a cowardly mob could strike again, knowing this time there would be strong resistance.

In my lifetime Reagan was probably the most popular US President and I don't recall Republicans worshipping him at the altar. It's silly and scary at the same time.

From what I recall, Reagan had plenty of detractors, but also many absolute fans. But both seemed generally more rational, and conversations of differing opinion more civil.

And your head didn't have opinions and information constantly pounded into it. The 24-hour news cycle was a brand new (and not as ubiquitous) thing during his presidency, Fox News didn't yet exist, and there was no internet. Did media outlets have left/right agendas? Sure. But it all seemed so much more...professional. If it wasn't all totally sincere, at least there was some sense of decorum.

Were Reagan of the same age and demeanor as his first campaign, running this year, he would probably come off as too moderate for the modern Republican Party and have no chance of even being nominated.
And to think, he'd be about a decade younger (!) than our two current candidates.

Republicans worshiped Reagan both during and after his presidency.  To suggest otherwise is folly.

It’s a question of degree, Matt. And important to remember the undeniable deification of Reagan sprang from genuine respect, not Trumf’s unhealthy combination of greed and fear.

Nobody who isn't an egomaniac of some kind would even attempt to be President. But among any number of differences between Reagan and Trump would be Reagan's ability to laugh at himself, not only as a public act, either. Reagan as a person could inspire genuine affection. Trump... well...

I think that humility, such as it was a construct of his “folksy” outward appearance, contributed to his ability to do so much harm.  Not just in the 80s, but here in California in the 60s.  Sure, Republicans respect and revere the man.  For good reason.  He represented everything they stand for, he just wasn’t as outward facing as Trump. Few are.  Behind the shadows, however, he and his administration were similar in the perniciousness of their governance.

In one of his novels Arthur C. Clarke presented the notion of the President being drafted by computers, since the job should never go to someone who actually WANTED it!
