I think I'll pass this time around. No great thoughts about it, and tuning out all the wah wah wah as best I can.

If Biden or any president actually illegally tried and imprisoned a dissident
leader, it would be DEFCON Zero for American democracy and would be
greeted with massive nationwide demonstrations dwarfing the BLM protests
that followed the George Floyd killing. That Republicans are responding with
unimaginative taunts instead of taking to the streets makes it clear how
much of a national emergency Trump's entirely lawful conviction is not.

Right wing media piled on Kristi Noem a few weeks ago for her dog-
shooting story, which goes to show how thoroughly the Republican
Industrial Entertainment Welfare Complex can defenestrate a formerly
favored but now toxic political star. They could turn the same treatment
against Trump but don’t want to.

I just hope the one takeaway from all this nonsense is that there is a reason a large portion of his followers believe in him: desperation. There is and has been a large portion of American society that has been ignored and sidelined. It has been growing steadily over time and those people are not going away. Trump has been their Hail Mary pass and he has been all too happy to exploit their predicament.
Desperate people often make awful choices. At some point their plight has to be legitimately addressed in earnest, or another more capable, less-of-a-buffoon agitator will be more than happy to succeed Trump in continuing to manipulate them.

Well, the MAGA people are the "white replacement theory" people. Instead of celebrating the diversity of our nation, they fear things that are different. It's not enough to understand how our population has changed (the largest growing racial group is "mixed") but there has to be a BIG CONSPIRACY to intentionally destroy the white, conservative, christian, population.

There are several groups of anti-Trump Republicans. Hopefully, they get more attention in the coming months.

The problem isn't just Trump, though:

Until people like Cruz, Gaetz, Greene, Blackburn, McConnell and several others are gone from Congress, we're still going to have issues. Nevermind some of the judges on SCOTUS. Mainly Alito, Thomas, and never should have been appointed Kavanaugh.

I almost added Boebert, but I think that problem will take care of itself.

Well don't you fret everyone, if AI continues to do more and more of our jobs we will have a VERY diverse unemployed population.

I could write a book of my thoughts on all this.
From the slavish cult following he attracts, to MTG attacking Dr Fauci, to
Trump’s rewriting of history (I never said ‘Lock her up’), to whoever it was
that said the pandemic was 2021 & no one challenged her, to our politicians
going full MAGA in the UK (Liz Truss appearing on Alex Jones’ show), Alex
Jones claiming he’s being silenced when really it’s about him not paying the
compensation, Farage saying he’s not running, now running in the UK, the
blatant lies, lies, lies from politicians, both candidates for the USA
Presidency showing extreme signs of dementia, the belief in what the bots
are posting on social media, the whole Israel/Gaza situation & people’s
reactions to that (on both sides).
I could go on.
We are so screwed right now. & so many politicians seem hell bent on
making it worse. & I cannot for the life of me fathom why they want to make
it worse.
We should be trying to make life better for the next generation.
Instead, there seems to be a ‘sod it, get what you can now & if the world
burns so you can do that, well then let it burn’ attitude.
It’s crap.
& Trump did this. He took what the Tea Party, Sarah Palin et al started, &
just put boosters on it. & he’s still going, & his cult is still going.
& there is no plan to address any of this.

After pining in the past about it I'm definitely now at the point where I'm glad I haven't had any kids! The future does not look bright. Politics has been dumbed down to such a point I've wondered if there even is a bottom, and how do you even get anyone decent to put themselves forward? I wonder if we might even run out of police, judges, jurors and election workers (at least honorable ones).

It’s so disappointing that the conviction changes nothing in anyone’s mind about who to vote for.  I know 50% of Americans can’t stand Trump, but my wife and I just refuse to visit the US anymore.   The US nation has taken a ramp to crazy ville, and I don’t see how things can ever get turned around now.  Too many Americans hate what goes in Washington so much that they fully support Trump and any of his followers who just want to demolish the federal government.   They have no plan to rebuild it, just end it.  Good luck to my US friends.

I think this will ultimately be overturned, but not because he didn't do it.  The evidence that Trump falsified business records, and that he conspired with Cohen and Pecker to kill negative stories (including the Stormy Daniels affair) before they appeared in the press seems very strong.

Legally, I think the problem is that Bragg charged these as felonies, rather than misdemeanors.

Falsifying a business record in NY is only a felony if it is done in the furtherance of another crime.  And I don't think the state proved there was one.

In their closing arguments, prosecutors accused Trump of "Conspiracy to Promote or Prevent Election" (New York Law 17-152).

The elements are: two or more persons conspire to promote or prevent the election of any person to a public office by unlawful means; and the conspiracy is acted upon by at least one of the parties thereto.

So the question is, aside from falsifying the business records, what did Trump do that was unlawful?

The falsifying of the business records was a crime
The crime was one of the acts used to promote an election - making Trump
look better than he was.
The two are linked.

Is it possible that here, in one post, John Wickett has outwitted the entire
NYC prosecutors office and out done Trumps legion of defense attorneys?

No. No, it is not possible.
