Flavio - yeah, that was unclear...
Laurie wrote the book in the mid-90s, and I saw enough of what he was doing at that time that I could imagine his voice from that time (as opposed to earlier in his career when he had a higher voice, or currently when he's "American"...) reading me the book.
I'll write good some day.

I read (and enjoyed) that novel a while back. It's the only Jack Reacher novel I
own.

How did you get hooked on Lewis, JB?•• ELMER GANTRY is one of my favorite Burt Lancaster movies. One day, a few years back, I decided to read the book. Altho I found the movie was almost NOTHING like the book -- the basic themes remain, but characters are given different personalities, different roles, and sometimes left out entirely in favor of players who exist only in the film -- I enjoyed Lewis' prose style, and decided to check out a few other books by him.

Still reading PUBLIC ENEMIES. While a really enjoyable read, it's also incredibly dense with a ton of characters told in a style that jumps around locations to tell it's interconnected tale. I can tell it's going to take me longer than the average to finish this one!

Still reading PUBLIC ENEMIES. While a really enjoyable read, it's also incredibly dense with a ton of characters told in a style that jumps around locations to tell it's interconnected tale.

Read that last year and was blown away by the level of detail and research that went into it. Some of the corrections to the mythology surrounding the gangsters were eye opening revelations of just how Hollywood and the media influence our views of crime and history, and the stuff about Hoover and the FBI was great.

Gangsters. The beginning of the Mafia. The time period. All favorite subjects of mine. I read a pretty exhaustive history of Bonnie and Clyde last year that I really enjoyed, so those parts of PUBLIC ENEMIES are familiar ground for me, but I've read virtually nothing on Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd and the Barkers. I'm also enjoying reading about the bumbling beginnings of the FBI. Good stuff.

Matt and Brad, I also enjoyed reading this a couple of years ago. So much information. Thought the author did such a good job that I read THE BIG RICH last year. Liked it also.
