Now sampling a new military historian who came to my attention just recently. I don't normally seek out books about WWII events that focus on the U.S. Navy's exploits, but the author has a very good rep along with some solid reviews. We will see if he lives up to the billing :-)

With the recent passing of author Philip Kerr, I felt like sampling one of his older (1997) stand-alone thrillers. I enjoyed reading a couple of his thriller novels that were outside of his best known Bernie Gunther series, such as Dark Matter and Hitler's Peace so I am hoping this one can give them a run for their money.

Louis L'Amour's The Sackett Brand, pretty quick read, just enough to re-acquaint myself with the story. One of my favourites and just acquired a copy in hardcover. I'm on my third set of Louis L'Amour books.

The first full set in paperback went to my Dad, because in my walkabout years he read them and handled them like he didn't own them. So as punishment I gave them to him.

The second set has gone to my son except for the hardcover books and now I am replacing a select few, but only in hardcover.

Received today the latest -- in many ways -- volume of DAN DARE, collected by Titan Books from the EAGLE comics of the Fifties and Sixties.

This one, tho titled "The Earth Stealers" also contains the preceding serial, "The Platinum Planet". Especially fun to read the latter, as my English auntie who used to send me bundles of EAGLE had missed the first episode. It wasn't until years later that I realized this, however, as the second episode does a fine job of bringing the reader up to speed. So good a job, in fact, they did not even include the customary "Story So Far" synopsis.

Just finished Close to the Edge: How Yes's Masterpiece Defined Prog Rock by Will Romano, one of the best books on music I've ever read, and that isn't my favorite album even. The author writes he spent ten years on this and it really shows. Interviews not only with the Yes musicians before and after this particular album, and studio technicians, but also managers, and artists in other groups who appeared alongside Yes live and often have real insights and stories that shed light on the Yes recordings.

A 'Backbeat' book it can stand next to Robert Rodriguez' book on the Beatles' Revolver album from just a few years ago.

I'm enjoying the DAN DARE volumes, too. Reprints of the original Dare were sporadic (that's an understatement!) in the 80s, so I'm glad we have the opportunity to read them now.

Okay, I'm a political nerd at times, here's the book I am about to start:
