Michael Doran, Ike's Gamble:  America's Rise to Dominance in the Middle East (see my Dec. 18 post about Blood and Sand, above).  Another look at the Suez crisis.  Thesis is that Nasser played the US against Great Britain, while making weapons deals with the USSR and destabilizing other Arab countries.  "Eisenhower and Dulles fell into t[he] trap in 1955 when they subordinated their entire strategy to the fanciful goal of solving the Egyptian-Israeli conflict.  While they were busy chasing a mirage, Nasser fleeced them."  Eisenhower was later to describe his handling of the Suez crisis to Richard Nixon as "his major foreign policy mistake."  Ironically, the history of the Suez crisis has largely been shaped by those who advocated accommodation of Nasser, notably Henry Byroade and Kermit Roosevelt.  Interestingly, Doran comments that "before becoming secretary of defense, Chuck Hagel reportedly brought three dozen copies of a study lauding Eisenhower's management of the Suez Crisis and distributed them to, among others, President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and then Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta."

I just bought The Great Book of Amber, which is a collection of 10 smaller novels by Roger Zelazny, The Chronicles of Amber.

The size of the book is right - nice and big to keep me busy for awhile. But the first thing that pops out is all 1258 pages are written in first person....oh no.

I hope it becomes transparent once I get into it.
