Barren Cove by Ariel S. Winter. The tagline for it was "Wuthering Heights with robots." But it's not Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Reminds me a bit of Vonnegut mixed with P.K. Dick. It's set in a dystopian future where humanity has mostly died off and only a few humans have left and robots have become the dominant "lifeform," albeit robots that act all too human. It's a pretty thought provoking book and like some of the best science fiction explores the idea, "what does it mean to be human?"

Judging by recent scholarship, her fate is to be mis-remembered based on inaccurate NY Times Reporting. I wonder if you've read the Harlan Ellison story, "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs," and if you have similar distaste for that treatment?

As a general rule, I don't care to see specific personal tragedy become fodder for fiction by unconnected parties.

No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II

*********

Started this yesterday. I've really become a fan of Goodwin's writing. She draws you in right from the beginning.

JB: "Kitty Genovese: The Murder, the Bystanders, the Crime that Changed America by Kevin Cook

Found myself thinking about this notorious case, recently. Decided to read up on it."

*******************

I recently watched "The Witness" on Netflix and would highly recommend it for those that want to know more about the person behind the headlines. Kitty's brother, only 16 when she was murdered, tries to find answers to his own questions about both her life and her death. I found it fascinating.

Something very interesting has emerged from the Genovese book. Apparently, Kitty was a Lesbian, something that I recall getting no mention at the time.

Reading this I was reminded of Tom Wolfe in THE RIGHT STUFF, writing of how the "gentlemen of the press" really were gentlemen in those days, and would include in their stories only what they felt the Public needed to know. There was no concept of a "right" to know.

Even the sleazier tabloids would hold back, in contrast to today, when "legitimate" news outlets lead with the dirt.*

_______________

* For the diminished of intellect among us, being a Lesbian is not "dirty," and never has been. But in the early Sixties, when Miss Genovese was killed, it was still illegal in most states.

"THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!
THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!" (Thomson)

I'm no Giants fan by a long shot ,but this is a great recounting of the 1951 NL pennant race. As told by Bobby Thomson.

Second time thru this one.
