Right now I am reading the Marvel Masterworks collection of The Champions, which has lots of John Byrne art before his days on the X- Men.  I became a fan during his run on Charlton's Spce: 1999.  Ever since then I was buying all his comics that featured his incredible art.

Also I am reading John Byrne's Silver Surfer #1 from 1982.

I got both on the Comixology site which has a lot of vintage comics for a fraction of the price I'd be paying if I purchased the actual paper versions.
The Champions Marvel Masterworks volume was about $10 on Amazon and the Silver Surfer #1 was $1.99.  It's the only way I can affordably collect comics again.  My local comic shop changed owners and the customer service is not the same. So Amazon and Comixology have become my new regular spot for purchasing comics!

James Ellroy's WHITE JAZZ.
I've enjoyed the three other "LA Quartet" books, but I'm struggling with this one. Hardly a complete sentence in the entire novel that's not dialogue. He's taken his style a bit too far with this one.

The only thing WHITE JAZZ has going for it, Petter, is the fate of Dudley Smith. It's not a bad story, but Ellroy seemed intent on punishing the reader along the way.

TO BOLDLY GO - SEASON ONE by Gerald Gurian

Fun to see all these behind-the-scenes shots from the first season of STAR TREK (TOS), tho it only took a few pages for me to grow weary of Gurian's constant (over)use of the words "iconic" and "rare."

Note to all who produce such volumes: the moment an image is reproduced in a mass-market form it is no longer "rare."

Also, 23 pages in, and I have already spotted two images that are misidentified. Which serves mostly to remind me of what a geek I am!

(His repeated use of "rare" reminded me of flipping thru an original art price guide, which also made extensive use of that word --- to describe pieces that were ONE OF A KIND!!)

I'm sure your Trek knowledge got even sharper over the last few years with New Visions.

To some extent. But how well I remember standing in a bookstore in Calgary, looking at one of the first "Making of..." style books on TOS. Glancing at the pictures included, I immediately noticed two of them were identified as being from the wrong episodes. And I spotted this because of the LIGHTING!!

My reaction was something like Uh Oh!

THE ALEXANDRIAN, by Martha Rofheart, a novel about Cleopatra.  THE MEMOIRS OF CLEOPATRA by Margaret George is one of my favorite books, so it was perhaps not wise to read another fictionalized version of the Egyptian queen; this one is coming up short.

Stacy Schiff wrote an excellent non-fiction biography of Cleopatra which I read a few years back. I have since recommended it to several friends.

(In it. Ms Schiff observed that with her mixed blood, mostly Macedonian Greek, Cleopatra was about as Egyptian as, well, Elizabeth Taylor!)
