I've read some of Lovecraft.  I enjoyed a bit and didn't dislike any of it, but a certain sameness kicked in after reading a few of his works.

To be honest, I enjoyed reading about his work more than actually reading it.

This I have heard. I'm interested to see if I find it so.

His writing style to me is so very distinctive that I find that sameness as well. I have a documentary of his life by Wyrd Studios called "Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown" if you are interested. I think you can watch it free here: Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown.

ONE HUNDRED PROOFS THE EARTH IS NOT A GLOBE (1885)

Don't ask. :/

I've seen some "flat earth theory" books recently. As the most non-scientific person in the world, even I have been able to debunk a lot of the 'theories'.

The first time we got pictures back from orbit, scientists around the world were happy to announce the final end to flat-earth "theories" -- but the nutballs were just as fast to point out that perfect curve of the horizon was actually the "edge".

"Haters gonna hate," they say, and Believers, it seems, are gonna believe.

A few late nights have cut my evening reading time down to almost nothing, so I have progressed only about two thirds of the way into the first story in the Lovecraft book, "The Cult of Cthulhu". Surprised to discover this story is written in what is essentially essay form. No dialog.

(My spellchecker recognizes Cthulhu! Uh-oh!)

I'll be very interested to hear what you think of Lovecraft, JB.

JB, read Dreamquest of the Unknown Kadath before you get too bored with Lovecraft.  It is his most imaginative story.

We are moving towards closure on a house and I have had the
pleasure of getting to know the current owner a bit. Really
interesting guy, who has been a medieval history professor
at a local university for the past 25 years. We got talking
about books (He's got at least 5 years on me and sold his
entire comic collection, when he got married in 89), and he
spoke of his love for the George Smiley novels by John Le
Carre. It has piqued my interest.... any fans of these
books?
