BALL OF FIRE: THE TUMULTUOUS LIFE AND COMIC ART OF LUCILLE BALL by Stefan Kanfer.

I've read a few (okay, a LOT!) of biographies on Lucy; this one was pretty run-of-the-mill.  With a life as well documented as this one, the author has to offer some new insight.  Based on the title, I was even hoping for some analysis of Lucy's comedy.  Nothing here but a recitation of well documented facts, without much panache.

One thing celeb biographies usually have in common: the 'third act' tends to be depressing.  The final years of Bob Hope, the last biography I read, could be summed up with an indirect quote from Carson: "Shoot me if I get like that."

Sadly, that's probably true of a lot non-celebrities' lives as well.

I just read Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. Tried to read it 20 years ago and it slid off my brain. This time it went in.

THE HIDDEN PERSUADERS by Vance Packard

When first published circa 1957, this exposé of the advertising industry caused something of a furor. (I was only seven years old, but I noticed people talking about it.)

Much of what it contains is old news now, almost sixty years later, but it still presents a fascinating snapshot of a time when America was in the process of losing its innocence.

Neil Gaiman's Trigger Warning. I love short stories and he hits three characters I love with Sherlock Holmes, the Doctor, and Shadow (from American Gods).

I have made it through the stories featuring the first two and thoroughly savored each. I also love the divirsity of each story in the book and have found myself rereading some of them after finishing others but before finishing the entire collection. Fun stuff that I should finish in the week.

The BrothersVonnegut: Science and Fiction in the House of Magic by Ginger Strand

Bernard, a research scientist at General Electric, and isworking on cloud seeding (making the clouds rain by introduction of chemicals).

Kurt goes to war, college, get married and eventually finds employmentat GE as well, but in the public relations department.

It was interesting to see how many of Kurt’s experiences hisbrother’s work integrated into his stories. It was also quite a treat to readthe genesis of his characters and stories (what they were like at the roughdraft and what they became by the finished product).

I must confess though that I have never read anything by Vonnegut(though I will now). I heard an interview with the author last week and thebook sounded fascinating…and it was.

The Great Comic Book Heroes : Peiffer
Third time or so reading this. A nice one sitting read.
It's been talked about here how time does not pan out the same way in different eras.  Peiffer refers to the "old days" of comics a couple of times even though it was only about 27 years from the first comic referenced to the writing of his book. But man did comics evolve. Hmm, 1989 the "old days".... no can't do it.
