Just finished The Long Fall: The First Leonid McGill mystery by Walter Mosley. I'd read most of Mosley's Easy Rawlins books over the years but had never tried any of the McGill books. Not surprisingly, I liked this one too. Guess I'll try some more.

Finished DEAD WAKE by Erik Larson. The final chapter literally had me I tears with its recounting of the changed lives -- some for good, some for ill -- of some of the survivors of the Lusitania tragedy. One quote in particular is likely to stick with me. Miss Margaret Mackworth, American, and 31 at the time of the sinking, floated alone in her lifebelt for some time, and from this lost all fear of death. "I do not understand how or why it did this," she would write. "The only explanation I can give is that when I was lying back in that sunlit water I was, and I knew it, very near to death." But she wasn't frightened. "Rather, somehow, one had a protected feeling, as if it were a kindly thing."

Currently halfway through THE AERONAUT'S WINDLASS by Jim Butcher, first of a new series. Recently read THE KING'S JUSTICE by Stephen R. Donaldson (two novellas, both quite good).

Halfway through SHIPSTAR by Gregory Benford and Larry Niven, a sequel to Bowl of Heaven. It's a hard sci-fi series about encountering a ring world type construct.
Up next is A DANCE WITH DRAGONS.

I enjoyed Shipstar. Just finished White Jazz by James Elroy. Just started 1776 by David McCullough. I'm up to the bit where where General Howe's redcoats have overwhelmed Washington's rebels and liberated New York. Hurrah! (If you know how it ends, don't tell me.)

Hey Paul,Always nice to find another Elroy fan out there. I don't know what else you've read by him but that book marks a big shift in his writing. I started with a later book ( American Tabloid) and then went back and read all of the earlier works. White Jazz was an enormous leap in style. I hope you enjoyed it.

I did! I've been reading a lot of his stuff, lately - American Tabloid, The Black Dahlia, LA confidential and Hollywood Nocturnes. Enjoyed them all.

Charles / Paul:
Be sure to give some of Ellroy's earlier novels a try as well. His trilogy featuring detective Lloyd Hopkins is very good and you can see how it helped set the table for his L.A. Quartet series (Black Dahlia, The Big Nowhere, LA Confidential, and White Jazz).
Ellroy is supposedly starting a new LA quartet series, set in the early 40's, with the publication of his most recent novel but I have not bumped into anyone who has read it yet.
