Still on "So, anyway..." from John Cleese. Slow reader here. I am quite busy and don't have that much spare time for reading or drawing for myself.

Had been tempted lately to read the novel of Silver Linings Playbook. It seemed to be beckoning me anytime I was studying in my college library. (Though I may have just been looking for a distraction... LOL!) So I bit the bullet and finally gave it a shot. And to anyone who ever feels like doing the same. Stick with the film! Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper’s characters aren’t too sympathetic in the film, but they’re even less likeable in the book. (Which is a bit of a problem when the latter is the one relating the whole story.) His wife and the character played by Chris Tucker barely appear. And Jennifer’s Lawrence’s character is no where near as much of a presence in the book. Heck, the whole dance sequence isn’t at all the climax the way that it is in the film. And although it all still has a relatively happy ending, the second half of the book is grim reading indeed. Thus, this may be one of the very rare occurrences where the film actually improves immeasurably on its source material. (That certainly doesn’t happen very often.) So yeah, the book is really NOT recommended! ------------------------------------------------
Sounds to me that I'd like the book a lot better, that most of the problems I had with the movie were created for the movie to make it a lot less honest and schizophrenic story (Bradley Cooper's character never felt to me like he was in the same movie as the rest of the characters)

It might very well be more realistic Ed, if that's what you'd prefer from the story. But to me having that approach felt like it removed a lot of the depth from the characters, making them more detestable and much more difficult to relate to. With the result that they effectively became just a bunch of unsavoury characters rather than being more multifaceted in the way that I thought they were in the film.
But yeah, to each and his own. You might indeed like it more than the film. As it is certainly very different.

Petter: Excellent choice. I have been reading James Lee Burke's stuff since the mid 90s and have always found them to be well crafted. Recommend that, if you finish the Dave Robicheaux books, that you give the Billy Bob Holland novels a try. Burke only wrote a few of them but I think that they rank right up there with the best of the Robicheaux series.

Just finished ONE SHOT AT FOREVER by Chris Ballard. It is basically a Hoosiers-type story about a small school baseball team in Macon, Illinois (population 1200) that battled its way to play for the 1971 state championship. A fun read and one of the more enjoyable baseball books I have read in quite some time.
Currently I am trying to catch up on reading the Michael Connelly novels that have piled up on my shelf. Just started THE GODS OF GUILT last night to catch up on Mickey Haller, everyone's favorite (fictional) Lincoln lawyer.
