Just finished HERBIE'S GAME by Timothy Hallinan, the latest novel in his Junior Bender mystery series. Enjoyable fun but I still prefer his Poke Rafferty series set in Bangkok.
Currently enjoying THE SILKWORM by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling), the follow-up in her Cormoran Strike series. I was late to the party when it came to reading the Harry Potter novels, but I certainly enjoy Rowling's ability to write a good mystery. Nice to be able to read one of her characters from the beginning of the series.
Next up: SOMETIMES THEY BITE, a collection of short stories by Lawrence Block, one of my favorite mystery writers.

Whose Body? by Dorothy Sayers. Her name kept popping up so I thought I give her a try. Plus I enjoy mysteries pre-computers/modern technology.

Had been tempted lately to read the novel of Silver Linings Playbook. It seemed to be beckoning me anytime I was studying in my college library. (Though I may have just been looking for a distraction... LOL!) So I bit the bullet and finally gave it a shot. And to anyone who ever feels like doing the same. Stick with the film! Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper’s characters aren’t too sympathetic in the film, but they’re even less likeable in the book. (Which is a bit of a problem when the latter is the one relating the whole story.) His wife and the character played by Chris Tucker barely appear. And Jennifer’s Lawrence’s character is no where near as much of a presence in the book. Heck, the whole dance sequence isn’t at all the climax the way that it is in the film. And although it all still has a relatively happy ending, the second half of the book is grim reading indeed. Thus, this may be one of the very rare occurrences where the film actually improves immeasurably on its source material. (That certainly doesn’t happen very often.) So yeah, the book is really NOT recommended!

The Flight Engineer 3: The Independent Command by James Doohan and S.M. Sterling:
Great end to a trilogy featuring James Doohan as Peter Raeder. It's about a former pilot/engineer fighting an alien threat. Good solid story telling and a great adventure story.

How to Win Friends and Influence People
I don't normally read self-help books but I was surprised how good it was (lots of practical advice). Also, the book has several stories about Lincoln which were used to illustrate the author's points (he had previously written a book about Lincoln). Before I read How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, Carnegie's second self-help book, I'm going to reread Lincoln by David Herbert Donald. It's been twelve years since I read it but I remember it was very good.

RATKING by the late British crime novelist Michael Dibdin. It is the first novel in his Aurelio Zen mystery series, set in Italy, which was the basis for the short-lived BBC television program.

On the comic book side, I just finished the collected edition of the recent comic book adaptation of Harlan Ellison's original script to "City on the Edge of Forever." Nicely drawn, and to judge by Ellison's comments in the intro, he was very, very happy with the book.
I enjoyed it--but--sacrilege--I have to say I enjoyed the filmed tv version more. Not all editorial "tampering" necessarily results in a diminished product.

Finished Michael Connolly's latest Harry Bosch novel, The Burning Room. As always, very satisfying. (And if you have Amazon Prime, may I suggest you check out the "first season" of Bosch).
Looking forward to starting a book by another favorite writer, Bernard Cornwell: The Empty Throne.

I'm enjoying the heck out of Stephen Ambrose's UNDAUNTED COURAGE. It's a great narrative of Merriweather Lewis and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
