That Pollard splash was the first piece of original art I
ever bought - back in 1980 at the San Diego Comic Con.

********

Oh man!  I would hate (love?) to know what you paid for it!  I bet you could easily get a return on that investment!  =0)

Ah, the First Page! How well I remember my own (a Russ Heath SGT ROCK). Were you as surprised as I was to discover pages were actually available to be bought? Almost ten years after I bought mine, probably not.

Meanwhile, please assure me that the Neal Adams Phoenix piece is a PRINT!!

I'd never even thought about it until I saw some pages at
a convention I'd gone to the year before. The first time
I saw a piece, I knew immediately what it was and it made
perfect sense to me. What was fascinated me were the
"mechanics" of it (the process). The Spider-Man splash,
as an example, has Ben Sean's name (the colorist) on a
piece of paper glued to the page, not written directly on
the page. I've always wondered if they didn't know who
the colorist was going to be when it was being lettered,
or if there was a last minute change - but I sure wasn't
about to peel it up to find out! Also seeing the mast
("While attending a demonstration....") as a stat, that
made perfect sense - no way would someone write that out
every month! Same with the legalese on the bottom.
Also, with this particular piece, seeing bit and pieces
of the the under drawing - so very cool as a young fan -
"Why did the inker change his right hand a little bit?
What did the X's on the "blue" part of Spider-Man's
costume mean?"

*****

I tell you what, it sure seemed like it was a lot of
money at the time. There were boxes and boxes of "5 for
$1" comics available at the time... I could have bought
100 comics, but no, I went home with this instead. (I
have often wondered what it'd fetch these days, but
really have no idea as to how to even find out...)

Absolutely. A gift from my a couple of my kids - but
personalized and signed by Neal himself!

*****

Is there a story about the F Troop art?

--
Not really. I grew up watching F-Troop re-runs as a kid,
I came across this piece at an unbelievable price
(especially considering it's age - about 46 years old
now) and couldn't say no.

In the end, it's all about averages. My "Kirby Corner" currently holds pages that are worth thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars. For some of the recent purchases, I did, indeed, pay four figures. But for some of the older purchases, the prices were in the double digits. (I was lucky to have been a staunch Kirby fan even during the "Jack the Hack" days, when the mention of his name was sufficient to invoke pantomime vomiting from some "fans".)

My first page was from Thor, and was purchased form the lovely Mr. Pollard in 1983/84 for the lovely sum of $6. I would've been 10 at the time...

It was awesome.

I didn't share this with you guys, but I think you'd enjoy it since
I saw a lot of love poured towards Ed Hannigan's work (and rightfully so);

I was finally able to add the prelim to TEEN TITANS SPOTLIGHT #13 cover
to my collection (a companion to the finished cover).

Here is the cover sketch by Ed Hannigan:

And here is the finished cover
(pencils by Hannigan and classic inks by Dick Giordano):

I was so happy to add this prelim piece to my gallery !

IMO, Ed Hannigan is the king of cover layout sketches and
now I have both theprelim and the finished cover both done
by Hannigan himself.

The other bit of important history is that this is the cover for
J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) his very first comic story.

The cover (and story) feature the first "face-off" between
Two-Face & Cyborg - a great match up idea IMO.

You can notice some layout changes between
the prelim and the final design.

Odd little disconnect there. For a moment I read Cyborg as Deathlok!

I gotta admit that it might be more than just a read;
looking at the sketch version (without checking out the finished
cover below) and he does look quite a bit like Deathlok...

Only with a bit more hair, and with a bit more hair style...:)

A rare update for me. My second Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez & Dick Giordano Captain Marvel style guide piece.
