The downside of our little clubhouse here is that all this cameraderie
sometimes hits me in the wallet!! There have been occasions when people
have not bid on pieces, because they assume some other Forum member is
also bidding. "Oh, that's S0-and-so! I should let him have it!" So So-and-
so ends up with a piece for less than it would otherwise have gone for!

ebay now hides the names of bidders in   auctions, check the Colossus one, its impossible to tell who the bidders are http://cgi.ebay.com/JOHN-BYRNE-COLOSSUS-COMMISSION-X-MEN_W0Q QitemZ170167760405QQihZ007QQcategoryZ14010QQssPageNameZWDVWQ QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The identity of a bidder has kept me out of auctions before actually, but not for the reason JB mentioned.  it was more  acase of, if he is bidding, I have no shot.

Why not bid though?  I know i'd be sour that i lost a piece on ebay, but not so much if it came to be that one of the forum actually won.  Reason i lost it is because i didn't bid correctly or it exceeded my price range, not because Gerry or Paul or etc. bid as well, especially on Jim Warden's auctions, when you know JB will see that revenue.

EBay can be a roller coaster ride.  Sometimes I think I have something, only to lose it at the last second.  That's happend to me many times.

Occasionally, there is a piece that I decide I need, like this one:

Everyone of my forum buddies knew I wanted it.  That didn't stop anyone from bidding though!

If I want something bad enough, I don't care what names are in the bidding history, I'm going after it.  Sometimes I use the other bidders as motivation to be a little more aggressive.

While I enjoy the comradery of folks on the board, I say every man for himself when it comes to bidding. I do know some folks on the board who would prefer not to bid against their friends. I never feel it is personal and the person who wants it more and can afford it should win.
