In the earliest known Robin Hood tale, Robin is a yeoman. In the earliest Superman stories, he could not fly. Batman used guns in his early stories.

In other words, elements early on may not jibe with the 'true' version. For me, Steve Rogers is physically perfect after taking the soldier serum, but the courage, intelligence and mental fortitude (which would be defined by his brain) were there all along. I regard the panels above with the 'didactic memory' as a misstep (separately: should it be eidetic memory?).

As for the question of Batman vs Black Panther... I'd say it depends on the context/story. Duking it out in the Octagon without access to any equipment, for example, is very different to say Black Panther somehow comes to Gotham, or in turn, if Batman ended up in Wakanda. Who has access to what equipment, who has time to plan, study their opponent, etc. And if it's in their own comic!

There are probably a lot of Marvel characters who could beat Batman in a fight: Shang-Chi, Daredevil, Elektra, Black Panther and Iron Fist for starters.
****

I sure would like to know JB's opinions on each of the above vs Batman.
