If I didn't know better, I'd say Marvel was throwing out the welcome mat.

(A feeble attempt at humor, imagining Marvel had seen this thread. Just days after these gorgeous pages begin appearing, Marvel announces the Uncanny X-Men are returning. To my eyes they already have.)

Edited to clarify post. Apologies for any confusion.

I would love to see JB ink these. His liquid line would be even more prevalent.

The other day I was looking at the issue of HIDDEN YEARS that I inked (16), and remembering what fun that was. However, I'm not sure I'd want to try that here. Truth is, my mind's eye has not yet found a finished look for these pages.

(Speaking of which, brace yourselves for the next one. An unexpected [I hope] turn is in the offing!)

Had to pipe in to add to the positivity here. These pages are fantastic. What fun to see these characters again. Kitty Pryde in particular. Interesting that we really never got to see her develop further with your input. I bet the Ninja Scientist bits wouldn't have surfaced. Regardless, looking forward to wherever this leads us all. Thanks for sharing with us.

The central point of my Kitty was that she was a NORMAL KID who suddenly found herself with super powers. Chris immediately sabotaged this by making her a "genius" (geniuses already know what it's like to be "different"), and once I left he seemed determined to scrub away every trace of my intent.

JB, will Kitty in ELSEWHEN be more of the normal kid you intended her to be? I think that that would be terrific.

Me: JB, it seems like you've had some revelations in revisiting these characters (and a lot of fun as well). What's surprised or pleased you most in doing this project?
••

JB: I suppose to find that these characters are still living in my pencil, after all these years.

O, sure, I've done a plethora of commission pieces, featuring them, but that's not the same as slipping back into harness with actual continuity -- both in the sense of flow of action from panel to panel, and remembering where this story is situated in X-MEN lore.

***

That's awesome! Thank you for answering--I think it's exciting to see this story unfold and glad that these characters never left you, in your heart or in your pencil.

"That page would make Jim Shooter's head explode."

---

Hmm. I must admit that my X-Men lore is fading from memory after all these years, so I don't recall the significance of that tunnel. I guess JB's next page will jog my memory!

I was referring to Shooter's, ahem, preference for conventional, straightforward layouts.

There isn't one.
