Once again, thanks for sharing! Everything is a bonus. Really happy that you have rediscovered so much creative juice and fingers crossed that all this storytelling goodness makes it into print.

JAHF! How FUN!!

Interesting to see how you’re approaching him these days. When you first drew him, he read more “muppet like” to me... he feels more real/believable in the drawing above (but he still feels like the same character). Nicely done!

The “Muppet-ness” comes in part from Terry’s inks. Reviewing these issues, via the ESSENTIAL trades, I am more than ever struck by the changes the inks brought to the pencils. Terry does not build faces the same way I do, for instance, and more often than not he favors his approach over mine—unconsciously I am sure.

Do any copies of your pencils exist from that era of X-Men, JB?

Not that I know of. I did not have access to a xerox machine, and Marvel was not in the habit of sending me copies.

Eric- Here's a nice panel image from Dave Mandel's collection on comicartfans.com that shows JB's pencils from an unused X-Men 138 page.

Yes, those few bits and pieces from 138’s original form are as close, I think, to seeing pages from that period still in pencil. And those, of course, are the actual pages, not pencils.

(Truth is, I’ve never really had a “historian’s” mentality toward my own work.)

Someone recently posted a single page of X-Men pencils on one of the JB facebook groups. I asked where they had found it since I'd only seen the stuff from 138, but they just said they'd found it online.

It looked legit, but seemed to be a xerox (the contrast seemed bumped up) I saved it somewhere, if I find it I'll post it.

Sometime between the publication of X-men 137 and Phoenix: The Untold Story, a magazine (I think it was Comics Feature but I can't swear to it) published some of JB's pencils from 137 and 138.

The page containing those panels of Cyclops from 137 was printed in full somewhere but I can't remember where.

Here's a link to the page from 138 on CAF.

Found a larger image of the full-page of Jean.
