I think the pencils look a bit murky with color and no inks -- especially since Ben's "waist band" was darkened in the example above.

JRJR did a great lookin' non-inked, colored Batman special a little while back...

...and I'm guessing JRJR approached the pencils differently, knowing they weren't going to be inked. Much like JB approached the Captain America #255 pencils differently...

Yeah, the belt came out too dark, and looking at the jpeg here, it makes me think I should have darkened his mouth.

But it looks pretty good for pencils that weren’t drawn with the intention of being colored without inks. Obviously, JB would have made different choices if that had been his intention from the start.

Here's hoping for an exciting 2019 and some positive news on the X-Men Elsewhen front!

Going back on that Thing piece, I notice 3 or 4 too visible perfect round shapes that were probably useful in the design but maybe necessary to erase a little in the finished work (one inside of the right elbow, on the left knee and 1 or 2 the left arm)

correcting anatomy errors

The pencils are pretty tight. I'd assume what is there is supposed to be there.

My first attempt at inking on my iPad Pro with the new Apple Pencil. (I had one a few years ago, but it feels like I'm re-learning this).

Wow, really loses a lot in reduction!

••

It can take a while to learn how to use the reduction. Ideally, it ADDS to the quality of the printed page, which is the main reason the pages are not drawn a publication size.

In my collection I have two double-page spreads from the first SUPERMAN vs THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, which was actually drawn printed size. It is a testament to the inkers (Dick Giordano and Terry Austin, mostly) that no quality is lost.*

* In the Seventies, Marvel tried to save money by having double-page spreads drawn on regular stock turned sideways, so the printed pages were close to actual size. The inkers (most of them) did not adjust, and these pages stuck out like sore thumbs.

Okay, for the New Year, and to minimize thread drift, I've decided to create a new folder where youse guys can post your inking samples. Keep this thread mostly for news and views on ELSEWHEN.

I know this is called "pencil practice..." but can I just say how excited I am for your WRITING of Elsewhen!  I'm so looking forward to that amazing balance of triumph and tragedy that you do so well (as in your FF run, or Alpha Flight, or ST: Crew---all brilliant works!)

SUPERMAN vs. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAM is easily my favorite comic of all time.  I was 10 when it came out.  Which two spreads do you have?  Do you know of place where I can see the pages?
