Leroy-- your post reminds me of something Reggie Jackson once said when asked how he felt when people boo-ed him at games. Reggie said, "They don't boo nobodies."

Checked out the article. Wow. It's scary that such potentially-libelous
power is in the hands of anyone with Internet access. From the comments
section, it's even scarier how some of those people define "objective" and
"fair."

You have my sympathies.

I have no idea of what metafilter is and I don't realy care. I found the link at the end of the wikibyrne talk, as you probably guessed already. and I thought: "Why not post this on the JBF?".

LOL .

I think the entry is just fine now.  Maybe they could have mentioned that he lives in a house that has a pool which he is covering so he can't have nearly naked young ladies over to swim, much to the disappointment of his good friend Bill Lukash, but you know, whatever.

The "metafilter" link makes for an interesting read -- at least as far as I could stomach. Seems about evenly divided between people who get it (rumor, opinion, innuendo and lies have no place in something presenting itself as an "encyclopedia") and those who, quite determinedly, don't. The latter seem very much of the "Byrne was rude when all I did was ask a simple question" school -- the simple question being something like, oh, "Hey, Byrne, why does your work suck?"

It's also fascinating to see the Big Lie at work, as it so often is found to be on message boards. Someone states something so preposterously false that no one bothers to answer it -- and thus it stands undisputed. (Did you know I "constantly" draw myself into the books? Apparently, "constantly" meaning a dozen or so pages out of about 20,000 drawn. But once stated, this becomes the same kind of internet "factoid" that gets repeated and absorbed by the unthinking masses.)

Why isn't this stuff posted here, you ask? Because here people are held accountable for what they post. No fun for trolls there! (Especially since we require real names, or at least something not obviously a false name. Way too hard to state your "opinions" when you cannot do so from behind the safety of a screen name.)

The thing that gets me is that a large percent of these people have a beef with the fact that the 'process' was not followed.  That JB went to Jimbo, and asked for help. Instead of getting into the interminable pissing match with the 'editors' as Joe Zhang can attest.

Cooler heads prevailed (after some time) and the page was edited. Over the near future it will be reconstituted with facts, and information that can be attributed to actual people, not just the weasely "Some say....."

Seems like a victory, but these knuckleheads are acting like this is the death of the wiki!!!

With the number of Wikipedia attributations I see turning up all over the place, I cannot honestly say I would see its demise as a bad thing. It does not matter how zealously the entries are monitored, unless there is some kind of "delay switch" that does not allow any edit to occur until after it has been checked, there is always a high likelihood that something will get by, and become "fact" in the minds of all who see it. Note the last few days, before my "page" was locked down, for all the proof you need of this. There are, unfortunately, small people, with small lives, who cannot find any better outlet for their energies than attempting to corrupt whatever they touch. (These would be the ones who protest the loudest, of course, when the system actually works, and their little games are undercut.)

The world will never change as long as people do not change.

And people never change.
