According to very sane and reasonable Christian Dispensationalists, the dragon is the European Union.
Even though dispensationalists identify as fundamentalist Christians and consider the Bible the literal, unerring word of God in English, they make an exception for the book of Revelation which is interpreted as full of metaphors about specific contemporary geopolitics.

I'm entirely aware of Revelation and various interpretations. You said that you miss the days of a good, old fashioned dragon portent, to which I'm pointing out that if dragons are a portent of the "End Times," then we've probably got more dragons now than ever before in our history as a species, as far as oligarchies go.
