I do the majority of my work with quills. I have a few tips that I gravitate toward. To help vary the type of lines I also mix in brush, tech pens and kuritake brush pens. Just about anything to give the variety that keeps the viewer's eye moving. It took me about a year of working with a quill to finally get what I want out of it the majority of the time I use it. Mark Morales suggested I use the quill to draw and not just ink to help speed the understanding of how it works. It does help to render with a quill. Also, I picked up "Rendering In Pen And Ink" by Arthur Guptill for some vintage instruction on how to use a quill.

I would probably use a tablet if the drawing showed on the tablet screen (I know they have those but they're out of my price range!).Yes, the quills definitely take time to master. Early on I thought it was as easy as picking them up and putting to paper - boy was I wrong! I saw a video of Neal Adams teaching how to properly hold an ink pen. It's a lot different than what I've been doing and going to a new technique is a hard habit for me to break!

Nobody said it was easy. No matter what way you decide to achieve the image, it will take lots of practice to do it well. I find the quill also imparts skill with a brush because they both rely on the pressure you put on the page through the tool. Technical pens have their place, but brush and quill lines have a variety and bounce that can’t be done with a pen unless you sculpt the line with multiple strokes of the pen. Even if you only use tech pens it will take lots of practice to do what Arthur Adams does with them.

Very true. Also, I don't recall Art Adams inking another penciller - I wonder what a Byrne/Adams page would look like. Here's my latest:Sorry for Storm's ankles! I had to cut the page in half to scan it and I didn't align it very well

Hi everyone! I saw the pencils of this page and really wanted to give it a try, not sure if everyone is posting in order or not, sorry if so.
I was working on Photoshop and had to scale it down quite a bit to upload it here, but the greys are ziptones.

Nice work Felipe! Very bold inking which gives a different noir-ish feel to the scene. Reminds me a bit of Klaus Janson

That makes sense, I do love a more noir inking style. I wasn't sure how much freedom I could give myself, I'm excited to try different pages also.

Here's my latest! I'm trying to get my inks as clean as possible. I initially used a nib but it doesn't work well with the cardboard paper I'm using (also it doesn't work on toner!) so back to tech pens and a little brush (panel 3) for me. I wish I could get the image sharper but I can't seem to do it when I reduce it for post.

This page was so much fun. It might be one of JB's best pages ever IMO and it was truly a pleasure to try and explore every pencil stroke.
