I am not that familiar with pre-1980s Dan Dare/Mekon (but Google images always helpful!). Really should try and track down some of those 1950s tales.

The Mekon scared me in the 80s. From what I did read, he was akin to the likes of Darkseid, Red Skull and Skeletor: absolutely zero compassion and no redeeming qualities.

Not at all! It's hollow, and I think it's made of fiberglass or something equally light.
