Drawing Hawkman's helmet calls for a delicate balance.

Note that, as rendered by Kubert, the eyes are larger than human eyes, but not TOO large. Also note that Katar appears almost to be looking out from under the beak, not actually thru the eyes.

I always got that impression too. A headdress, not a mask. Obvious in the first issue of Flash Comics.
