Hey Steve-
The products out right now are based on the cards, not the movie. Cool, aren't they!

I'm a bit surprised to see so much MARS ATTACK! merchandising and tie-ins recently.  Wasn't the movie considered a failure?  Is there something in particular driving this revival?

Dave, you are right. Looking over my card collection, I don't know what I was thinking.
Yes, they are very cool. There is a Mars Attacks book that came out about the history of Mars Attacks cards with high quality photos of the original 55 cards (with prelim sketches) plus the other cards that have came out.

Thom- it's the 50th anniversary of the cards.
and if you've never seen them before, the cards are awesome. Do yourself a favor and buy the book that collects them all.

Steve- thankfully, the movie didn't do much to change the design of the martians. The only thing the film did was make them short. They were as tall as most humans in the cards. So the figure can go head to head with other figures in the same scale. I had mine fighting Space Ghost.

I bought the expensive Hot Toys Mrs Attacks Martian. When the figure arrived in the mail, I opened him up and thought "oh yeah...they're really short..." Sigh.  It's a great figure, but based on the movie...so he's a little bugger...

Flash & Buck are not impressed...

Anyway, I am a HUGE fan of the cards, and the art of Norm Saunders. He's tops in my book!

I need to go re-watch classic Ultraman.

*******

I bought the DVD at Target for 5 bucks.  I can't bring myself to watch it.  I think that part of my childhood needs to be left alone and not tampered with.  I know with a certainty it just will not hold up.

Dave, I am a fan of the cards as well. Awesome series and wonderful art.  I have the complete re-print set from the 1990's and the new set too. If you have not bought a box of the new set, do yourself a favor and do so. They look like the original 55 (same type of card stock) and there are extra cards of course and a 1/1 sketch card in each box.
When I first saw the figure I remember the martian form the cards seemed to have bigger/fatter heads and the "tendrils" were not has pronounced.
I have the bobble head as well, they are so neat.

I really love your "Invasion of the Saucer-Men" alien.  I love those little guys!

NHK's flatulent mascot + DC...  Seems to be a good match.

John Harrison: I watched it last year, both the subtitled and dubbed versions. The subtitles are markedly different from the English versions I remembered as a kid, which made it a unique experience for me. For one thing, the original version takes the subject a bit more seriously than the English adaptation. That made it more worthwhile.

As always, though, your mileage may vary.
